Insufficient funds on gift card

Is there a way to pay a bill with a gift card that doesn’t have sufficient funds to cover the entire bill, and then have the customer take care of the remaining bill with whatever payment method the customer is comfortable with. The way Square register is now, my customer is not able to use the remaining amount on their gift card in an easy manner. Split payment doesn’t seem to be the answer either. If the bill is $10, and a gift card only has $6 on it. The Square register should remove $6 from the bill and show that $4 is needed to satisfy the bill.

I don't have a terminal in front of me but I believe you should just swipe the gift card first when at the payments screen.  it will process the fact it is short in payment and asks if you want to use the gift card and then ask for an additional payment form.
