How to I turn off the requirement of a phone number when someone uses our donation link?
Yesterday I called Square and had several people including developers working on this problem. The answer is The Advanced area in Online Square does not make changes in Square Donation buttons created.
There is no optional phone number outside of the Website Store. So this is just not possible. They did put in a request to have this corrected in the future.

@SethHouse Thanks for reaching out! You can edit which fields are required at checkout under Settings > Checkout > Advanced. This will affect all orders, though, and not just donations.

Will this affect previously created links? I just changed it but it is still requiring a phone number.
@SethHouse, it will update everything. Keep in mind it will still show the field, but it won't make it a required field.
It is red and still says it is required.
Make sure you have "Make phone number optional" selected. I realize that screenshot was confusing so I can edit it, but it needs to be checked off to be optional.

Hey @SethHouse one idea I have for you here...
When you're making a lot of changes to the online store settings the old settings may get "stuck" in your browser. Clear your browser cache and history, close and reopen, and then check if the phone number field is still required. I'm betting that it will be optional after that.
I even tried it in a different browser. I will call someone tomorrow. Thanks for trying.

HELP! Customers are unable to get their orders in because of the phone # requirement. I've made it optional, but they are unable to bypass it still. I've double/triple checked this option in the advanced settings and I'm still having multiple customers telling me they can't submit orders without a phone# and it's rejecting the # they enter. I DO NOT NEED NOR WANT THEIR PHONE NUMBER, I'm guessing this is valuable for square however. So Square maximizing their data acquisition is costing me orders. I would like to delete this field entirely. Short of that, how can I get it to stop REJECTING #'s that I don't want/need in the first place. HELP! Getting frustrated! Obviously...sorry!
I'm having the same issue. I hope Square addresses this soon, I like the site I've built but am not interested in data mining my customers... May have to look into alternative hosts.
