How to turn off "tax included" by default?

I have a small number of items which have tax included in the price. Everything else is tax added.

Both seem to be toggled ON by default. So each time I create a new item, I have to manually turn off "tax included". This is time consuming, and we miss quite a few when adding a large number of items.

Is there any way to set "tax included" to OFF by default? I always want to charge tax, but I don't want it to be ON for everything.

Hello @mikesclub! There isn't a way to set one type of tax as the default, but I definitely agree that would be a useful feature!

Are you creating items from your Point of Sale or from your online Square Dashboard? If might be slightly faster to create new items and apply taxes from your Dashboard. Go to the Items section > then select Taxes from the menu on the left > you can apply/remove a tax to many different items at the same time.

I appreciate your response.

I'm not trying to set one type of tax as default over another, I just want to be able to turn the various types of tax ON or OFF by default.

For example, I have the regular sales tax set up as one type of tax. And it's alway ON. This is good.

But I have a few items for which I want the tax to be included in the price. For those items I turned OFF the regular sales tax and created a second tax, which has the toggle for "include tax in price" enabled.

So technically, I have two taxes: the regular sales tax (which is added to the price), and the one with sales tax included in the price.

The problem is, when I add a new item to my inventory (which I do by the dozens every day), both taxes are turned ON. Every single time we add a new item, we have to take the extra step of turning the "tax included in price" tax OFF. This is very very time consuming and, to be honest, we forget that step a few times each day, creating havoc with my tax setup.

Yes, I could manually scroll through my thousands of items every day using the Dashboard and make the changes, but why? Square should be able to let me turn a tax ON by default or OFF by default. It's just a toggle on my screen, which means it should a very simple line of code. Thats what i'm asking for.

@mikesclub

Sounds like what would work for you specifically is not to have Tax rules for all your items, but to have tax rules PER item with the option to include it in the price or not.

Right now we would have the ability to add one tax rule, but not specify whether it's added on the item or included in the item. Definitely a feature request we can pass up to our team for iteration.

The tax settings do not transfer between the Square Dashboard and the Online Store. That is the bigger problem in my opinion. Is it supposed to? If I create an item in our Dashboard and set is as "No Taxes" I have to then also go to the online store and mark the item as Tax Exempt. That in addition to having to change the item type to "prepared food" then add it to a category.... major pain every time adding an item before it appears in our store... going to post about it now to see if it's possible to also set default item type and/or get categories to sync.

@BeanBuendia I'm really sorry to hear the frustration regarding your items and the online store. While the two sync, we are still working on creating a better sync between the two. For right now, you will need to manually do the changes, but I have passed your feedback to our development team for future decisions. Thank you!

I'll believe it when I see it. They don't seem interested in fixing even more basic issues. Perhaps you can also suggest they hire somebody just to do Quality Assurance and actually address ancient issues people still post about.

Hi @BeanBuenida - I can step in and speak to this a bit. We field thousands of feature requests each week here on the Seller Community, and bringing these features to fruition often takes an ample amount of time and effort from our engineers. We want to ensure that our releases are not just surface level products, but the best all-around resources to help you grow your business.

These requests also span an array of different aspects of our products; some are more major, while some are periphery features. Our Product Teams do have a road-map for future additions to our offering, but the nature of our work includes trial, error, and set-backs. So sharing a timeline would be far from accurate and more than likely cause more confusion and angst.

We are conscious that waiting for new features to rollout can be frustrating and tedious, but we hope to bring you the best product available that will help a wide swath of our Sellers. Thanks again for your patience!
