How to take a cash payment and system calculate the change?

I am selecting the customer, selecting "take a payment" and entering an itemized sale.  When it's a cash sale and the customer overpays the amount, I owe change back. The system does not calculate or record the transaction, it only records a cash sale for the amount of the itemized sale.

Example:  Itemized sale is 180.00, customer pays 200.00, I owe customer 20.00.

thank you!

I’m assuming that you are recording your transactions from your dashboard, and using virtual terminal to record payments.  If so, then there is currently no way there to have virtual terminal calculate the change due to a customer.  I don’t think it was created with the idea that it would be used for everyday retail processing, really.  Two things you can do.

First, go here to submit a feature request to Square.  Their product teams will evaluate it and decide if they feel like it is something they can add onto virtual terminal.

Secondly, the Square POS app for phones and tablets is free and you can use it to do what you want to do.  It allows you to enter the cash that was paid, and it will calculate the change due.  It even gives you the ability to keep a running count of the cash you should have in your cash drawer at the end of each day.  You’d probably find that that app will help you do this and a lot more functions, depending on the kind of business you run.

Let me know if you have any other questions.  I hope these thoughts help.
