How to accept a deposit from a customer?

We'll be in a trade show this weekend and some customers will want to just pay a deposit right there and then on our square pos and pay the remainder later online. How can I set this up?

Solution

you can do it by creating an invoice for that customer and select required deposit. Here is an article on how to.

There isn't a way with Square to take a record a deposit on a sale.  You could create an item called Deposit and sell that.  Then sell the rest later.  This is messy I know but about the only way to do it.

Is it somehow possible to require someone to purchase an item (ie. deposit) before checkout?

This reply was created from merging an existing thread: How can I take deposits from checkout?

Does anyone know how to take 2 payments from an invoice? I'm trying to take two payments in the shop with a swipe or chip but SQUARE only allows deposits on invoices to be sent via email and payment to be taken through email only. Does anyone know a way around this?

@H1ghsociety I've moved your post to this thread so where other sellers have answered this question.

If there is a way to accept deposits at checkout we'll update this thread to let everyone know.

Yeah it is messy @H1ghsociety .  Square's deposit and recording payments options are not fully developed.  What I've done that helps in some circumstances is to have a 'deposit' and 'balance due' item on my item catalog.  That way I can process a deposit or balance payoff done in the shop without making the customer or myself jump through the weird process that is in place now with the invoicing.  Problem is that you have to then mark the item 'paid by Square' on the PC dashboard because, for some reason it isn't on the POS as an option.  If you don't it will show up double if you mark it paid by 'other' on the POS.  Like I said, it is messy and you have to remember to jump through those extra hoops.
