How do you default items to unavailable before making them visible online

How do I make items 'unavailable' in the online store as the default. I do have my items sync (toggle) set up correctly. The toggle to make them 'visible' automatically is not turned on.

Thanks for reaching out, @Happyplants

Can you confirm your website URL so we can take a look? It sounds like you have this setup properly, so I'm not entirely sure why it would not be working properly.

No worries, and thank you. I'm taking a look into this for you.

How do you currently add new items? Do you use the POS app, or do you add items directly through the Square Dashboard first?

I add through the Dashboard (Item Library) because I have a physical shop, and the priority is to get them to the sales floor. This is where I use Integrations for photography from Faire and print barcoded labels. The Web portion is curated later.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When you say dashboard, does that mean you are logged in through a browser on your computer? You are not adding the items from a Square device or app?

Yes through a browser.

Hi @Happyplants

I'm not seeing any known issues that would cause the toggle to not work properly. It looks like you spoke with JJ on a different thread, and mentioned that you had reached out to the support team. I recommend following up with the team to see if they can test this out in real time, or consult with the advanced support team to see if this can be escalated for further research.

If possible, please make sure to leave at least one newly imported item unedited on the Square Online dashboard as this may help the team with the escalation.

@BernadetteA  So I talked again with tech support and they said they will put in a request to look at it. However this is the way it works now and there is no plan to change it. Bulk edit those items to unavailable is their answer. When you are an owner operator, and you just added 10 items and they are automatically live, you get a phone call, a delivery, 5 customers, it can even be hours later that you finally get them bulk edited. Yet everything is for sale on your website, before you can make final edits, Shipping or pick up, shipping weight, tax, gift option, Photos for variables, the website category. I tried adding to the dashboard library first and leaving a price out, as I can add variable priced items to the web items, which defaults to unavailable because its variable. However then when I switch back to the library and as soon as I put in a price, it goes automatically visible. Another Tech support suggestion was to add new items to the website first, however this negates any integrations with sites like Faire, which will not add any photography or descriptions to items already on square. So my options? Don't put items online, less items online, do more photography and descriptions, redirect employee time (from other needful things) because of this one update. This has literally crippled my business. Especially my online business, which doesn't equate to even a handful of orders, but it was a great way for people to learn about us and come in based off what they saw online. I have 41 unedited items in my dashboard waiting to be caught up with, and tons of merch not even out because of this. Most of it will be out of stock before I can even get it online. I am sorely disappointed in this update.

I understand the frustration, @Happyplants 😕 That does sound pretty complicated, and I can see how it makes your workflow less efficient than before.

I'll be sure to share this feedback with the teams, but it does look like they are working to address the change based on the pinned comment from this thread

I also recommend checking out the comment on the same thread by FGFGIFTS here as well. It looks like they were able to find some positive work arounds for now.

@BernadetteA  I sure do appreciate your help on this. I have so many back logged items some are even out of stock before they could ever be made visible. It literally made me have to change an entire workflow routine, with nothing but bad trade offs. I'm so behind now its going to cost so much time and time = money just to catch up. My trade off unfortunately is not curating the Website now. Which cannot go on, so I've literally had to weigh my choices, stay in an unsustainable situation or leave. That is how bad this update is for me, starting over on a different platform is the best choice.
