I want to be able to turn off the ipad screen when my business is closed. How do I turn off the screen and let it go to sleep?

It can be done, but it's quite tricky.
If you enable assistive touch, you can power the iPad off using this feature. In order to power it back on, you would need to unplug, and then plug the Square Stand back in (as plugging an Apple device into a charger powers it on automatically).
Out of curiously, would you mind sharing why you'd like to power it off each night? The iPad's standby mode is essentially equal to powering it off.

This month, we've updated our ios and square software but once every other day, the stand stops communicating with the reader or charger or printer and the only way to get them communicating again is to take out the iPad from the Square Stand and turn it off and turn it back on.
Do you have a better solution for this current problem?

@FestivalOfTrees, This is a known issue since the introduction of iOS 11. the fix for this bug that Apple introduced in this new OS is fixed in iOS 11.2 which should be coming out soon. until then you can either continue with how you have been resetting it lately or you can install the iOS 11.2 beta from Apple. If you have other Square devices it is strongly recommended that you do not upgrade them to iOS 11 at this time.
