How do I remove my square stand from the counter top

Trying to remove my square stand (with adhesive) from our counter top.

You unscrew it from the adhesive pad... Just keep turning it counter-clockwise

Sounds & looks fairly easy until you have a stubborn stand that feels like it's gonna break on you with all the force needed. In fact, I just broke ours.
