How do I merge items from different categories?

Over time, duplicate items were created.  The name may have changed, a different description was given, item misspelled or various reasons why they were created.  Presently, each item is created correctly in the correct category.  However, when creating a report, that item will appear several different ways making it very difficult to read the report.  How do I merge these items so when reading a report, sales of the of the same item are more concise?

Hello!

 

Unfortunately there isn't a way to merge duplicate items together. These items will appear in your reports as individual items sold. 

 

What you can do is bulk edit your item library using the Import/Export Tool. This would allow you to remove any duplicates and place the items in the correct categories from one spreadsheet.

@Horsefeathers I’m a sole proprietor, and I can say from experience that it’s a big problem for us, too. Most of us don’t have staff to hand things off to, so we’re already struggling to keep up. This is part of the reason I’m actively seeking out another payment platform with a pricing structure that works for me. I’m even considering PayPal despite their flat fee being high relative to the cost of my products. I’d rather lose $0.49 on a $5-10 sale than spend any more time finding bad workarounds for Square.

Wtf! Nearly 7 years after this thread was started it's still a problem seemingly requested by a large number of square users. This is frustrating. I've called so many times about simple issues with simple solutions only to be told that the mysterious dev team is aware of the issue and working in a solution but then find posts on here from 3 years ago regarding the same issue with the same response. I won't be taking square with me to my permanent salon once construction is finished. Small business owners need the same options as large businesses. It's a super simple fix. Just effing do it!

I had no idea that every time I edit a product, it is creating a new sku.  I've changed a few of them multiple times as I refine how they should be labeled and categorized.  Now my reporting is a nightmare.  This is outrageous. 

 

I worked for a wholesale platform for years as a strategist. While I know that upgrades take time, but 7 years is really outrageous.

 

I'm locked into Square for the time being.  That said, if this feature hasn't been updated by the time my obligation ends, I'll definitely be considering moving to another platform.

 

After seven years, we should be given a projected date that this feature will be made available.

I'm similarly surprised that this discussion has been going on for 7 years without any resolution. Any updates at all? This seems like a pretty common and common-sense feature to have available in a POS/inventory system.

 

Similar to comments from other users, our store deals with hundreds, if not thousands, of SKUs and inevitably we end up with duplicates. It would save us a lot of hassle to be able to merge those duplicates.

 

If you're not planning to add this feature, can you at least explain what makes it impossible to add it to your platform?
