How do I merge items from different categories?

Over time, duplicate items were created.  The name may have changed, a different description was given, item misspelled or various reasons why they were created.  Presently, each item is created correctly in the correct category.  However, when creating a report, that item will appear several different ways making it very difficult to read the report.  How do I merge these items so when reading a report, sales of the of the same item are more concise?

Can you answer why it is taking so long to get this feature added. The first request was in 2017. Square representatives have commented every year since then. Is there actually a feature request ( I suspect those all go into a pit behind Square headquarters and are never actually addressed). Is anyone actually working on this? Are you a real person, or are you just an automated pacifier that says there is no update on the feature request but not to worry because you have tagged everyone and you are going to notify us of any news?

Add me to the list of people requesting this feature. Discovered just what everyone is talking about. Any progress made on this matter? I would love to save time and energy on managing inventory. I feel like not adding this feature over the last 5 years has likely lost many clients to Square's competitors that do have an inventory merge feature, or just a better inventory management system in general.

This is SERIOUSLY STILL not being worked on or added as a feature??? We've been waiting since 2017! 5 YEARS??? C'mon, there is no reason why this is a difficult feature to add...it's such a basic tweak that is so long overdue.

The only bright side to this whole topic is knowing I can stand in solidarity with my fellow sellers in the community as we await this feature. The slog that is inventory management is atrocious. I suspect Square has no intentions to actually add this feature, as there is no incentive for them to do for (increased revenue). I disagree, happy customers go a long way, unhappy even further. Sure switching to a different platform would be a masochists task, but it doesn’t stop those hearing my gripes from straying from Square’s platform. Seriously shortsighted.. 

On another note, I just got an email from Square. I have a new rank! Oh goody, that’ll placate me. Also a prompt to share my opinion just u see this comment box, as if this isn’t sharing opinion the forum and fashion for other community members to see.

Perhaps there’s a good way to petition this change and see just how many others would love this extremely helpful and time saving feature.

No movement on this, huh? It's enough of a hassle that you can't merge two locations, but it would at least be nice if the catalogs could be synced without creating duplicates because they were set up with one single different character in the title. This is a nightmare when it comes to syncing with inventory databases.

Kind of crazy this can't be solved... Just read through all the comments starting in 2017, crazy that a merge feature is something very much needed in Square and they can't make it happen. Put me on the list of people needing this feature.

PLEASE ADD ME TO THE REQUEST TO MERGE ITEMS.  Ideally, we want to merge by sku and there is no workaround for this.  We cannot efficiently manage our business without this SIMPLE feature.

I am absolutely blown away by this not being in effect…Please, For the sake of your customers make this a thing. It is interesting to see how these issues are handled. Are they passed along? Was anyone ever updated on its preogress?

@HyzerFlip sadly, as you can see, it's been more than five years and Square still doesn't see this as something that needs to be addressed. The majority of Square's user base is sole proprietors selling maybe a few hundred items. They are not geared towards handling larger organizations with complex inventory requirements.  Sales are up, profits are up, stock price is up, so they really don't need to enhance the product much as long as folks stick with them.
