How do I allow for customization of multiple items that are the same?

We are doing a fundraiser with different price points.  How do I allow for custom text if someone orders 4 of my gold level but wants the 22 character text to be different on them?

Looks like the best solution is to enable a notes field so customers enter that info at checkout. Checking with our Ecom Team for other solutions though. 

I'll be back if they suggest a better workaround.
