How can i apply a coupon to a purchase but charge taxes?

How can I apply a coupon to a customer's purchase, without taking the tax away if the coupon absorbs the entire purchase price? I'm participating in an event where the customer must pay the taxes

there is not a way to apply a coupon and leave the original tax on the transaction.  you could set up a variably priced item called sales tax enter the amount of the tax and add that on to the transaction, then apply the coupon.
