I am using the online store for my restaurant. Is there a way to turn ordering off if we get too busy, or if I need to close the shop for a day for some reason?

Yes, within your Pickup & Delivery settings within the Online Store, you can disable both fulfillment methods so customers cannot place orders anymore:
