The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "Make an item non-discountable?"
Is there a way to make an item non-discountable? Ex, I offer 15% off an order, but do not want to discount shipping. Do I have to discount the items individually rather than apply the blanket 15% discount on the order? I've even tried adding the shipping after the discount. Thanks!
@wrmakeup With the online website you can specify that coupons can discount only certain categories or items. Categories make it easy to keep shipping untouched.
If you are talking about using the point of sale, there are a couple different ways to remove a discount.
Hi @wrmakeup,
Tagging some Super Sellers here who use the Online Store who might be able to help you out!

But other than removing the discount at the item level (i.e., after it's rung up), is there a way to designate an item as non-discountable within the Square system? My staff don't always remember to remove the discount from gift cards.
Hi @wearmacon - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community👋
Aside from @Donnie-M's suggestion and the settings we have available for Online Store coupons shown below, we, unfortunately, do not have any additional ways to manipulate the setup here.
At this time, this would be considered a feature request. Although this feature isn’t currently available with Square Online, it’s a great idea and I can see how it would be beneficial to your business.
I’ve shared your feature request with our Product Team, as they are constantly improving our products based on feedback like this. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post from one of our Seller Community Moderators.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates, here, in our Seller Community. We appreciate your input!
I've advised my staff to just ring up Gift Cards as a separate transaction, so discounts will not be accidentally applied.
This would be a great feature - please update!
Hey there, @Olbrich -
Thank you for adding your voice! It looks like another seller has added this to our Ideate Board as a feature request for our Product Team.
I would recommend adding a like or comment to the post too. This will allow you to get updates whenever we get more information from our Product Team and it will show how popular this request is among our sellers.
WE also need to have a way to make sure certain items are not discountable, in my case labor.
Hi @dearness - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community👋
Are you needing to exclude items from specific Discounts for transactions on the Point of Sale? If so, you can apply Discounts to Individual Items by following the steps below.
Once items have been added to your sale
Under Current Sale in the Checkout screen, tap the item you’d like to discount.
Toggle on the pre-created discount you’d like to apply.
Tap Save.
You can also utilize the Discount Rule feature to exclude certain Items or Categories from a specific Discount as well. These settings will be listed under the Discount in your Square Dashboard online, as shown below.
I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions.
Thanks for the info, but I have 1000's of SKUs and to take the discounts we have and say apply to 99% of them does not seem like a good fix. And we do know to dicount line items, but if we have 20 line items, that's a very slow way to process the transaction, And sometimes, our cashiers just plain forget. I would like to be able to check off a few SKUs that any and all discounts applied to the sale are excluded from discounts
I am on the discount page on my square dashboard, and I do not see an option to apply discounts to certain items or categories.
Would really be beneficial if discounts only applied to certain items, and we didn't have to go in an apply discounts one by one when checking someone out.
Thanks
Hi there, @CCCH thank you for following up on this thread 👋
From the Discounts page, you'll need to click on the individual discount from the list of discounts that you want to apply. Then on the Edit Discount page, you'll need to toggle on Automatic Discount before you are shown the additional options mentioned in my last post.
I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions 🙂
I would LOVE to see this ability as well - I am SO TIRED of trying to train my employees to charge gift cards separately! Especially since NO ONE seems to hear me when I tell a group. Each one needs to make the mistake and have me correct them, individually, first....
We are working on improving how Feature Requests like these are tracked and addressed @TwoScoops
I recommend you submit a Feature Request here. This will help our product team get visibility and track other Sellers' interest in your request.
Important: When submitting a request, make sure to include the desired feature, and provide the details of how this feature will help your business succeed (how would you use it and what you expect from it).
Square has no intention of fixing or creating any of its users requests. They still haven't fixed the decimal issue that they've known about since 2017!!😳
They take your money and create a space like this so that their team doesn't have to answer phone calls or return phone calls or follow up on phone calls. So many issues and bugs but they just don't care. AND ALL OF THESE ISSUES ARE EXTREMELY BASIC!!! Square is only good for retailers with fewer than 50 items.
