Why can’t we fight a dispute if a chip reader isn’t used? I used the original square device that I plug into my phone and swipe the card with. A man bought two items from me. The next month he disputed the charge and won because I didn’t have a chip reader. It was almost a $60 sale.
That changed about 7 years ago. Because you didn't use the most secure way possible to take the transaction the burden falls to you. Swiping a chip card will automatically make you liable for any fraudulent transactions. This shift in liability was brought on by the credit card companies, not Square.
Here's some info on the Liability shift.
