Entering items

I hope you can help!

We are setting up our store and need to add the following items.  We sell Seedlings (plants) and the produce itself at our greenhouse.   We also sell the seedlings online through our bigcommerce store.  We want to track the inventory of every item we sell, whether online or at our greenhouse.

Seedlings and produce are categorized so customers can find them easily online.  I have no problem changing the categories to make this work.  Produce and seedlings are essentially the same (there are spring mix seedlings and spring mix produce) but the price is different.

Right now they are as follows in Big Commerce, but I know you cannot nest categories in square.

  • Seedlings
    • Fruit
    • Herbs
    • Vegetable
      • Greens
      • Tomatoes
      • Lettuces
      • Other Vegetables

I could always rename, if needed (ie item is "Lettuce - Spring mix" rather than lettuce being it's own category.)  Would I use Price Variants in this instance?  Would I setup an Category "Vegetable" - Item "Lettuce - Spring Mix" and have price variants "Seedling" and "Produce"? Is the inventory tracking every "Lettuce Spring Mix Seedling" sold and every "Lettuce Spring Mix Produce" sold?

The other question I have is also about setting items up correctly.  We sell some accessories both in store and online.  The online price on our website includes shipping, don't aks! It's basically because the extension needed to calculate shipping differently depending on the category is very expensive and a pretty hefty amount for a small business to pay each month.  So back to the job at hand. I need to add an item (for example, Rockwool 98)  the price to purchase in our store will be for exampl $14.95 and the pice to purchase online is $19.95.  But whether someone buys it online or in the greenhouse I need the inventory for Rockwool 98 to update.  It's the same item.  Is this a Modifier?

You have a lot going on here.  I will try my best to answer your questions and point you in the right direction.

Categories

You can only have an item in one category and you can not next categories as you know.

Here one way to do your categories.

  • S-Fruit
  • S-Herbs
  • S-Greens
  • S-Tomatoes
  • etc.

Then

  • P-Fruit
  • P-Herbs
  • etc.

This will separate your seedlings and produce and create your categories.  If you want to track all the Tomato sale in both categories you just select both categories in your report.  You can now create items in each of these categories. You wouldn't use variations in this case.  If you just do your categories:

  • Fruit
  • Herbs
  • Tomatoes
  • etc

then you can use variations.  However, you will not be able to see if produce is doing better than seedlings without selecting all the appropriate items on the report.

Now for your online store.  The Items that have a different price online than in-store cannot be the same item.  You cant' have one item with multiple prices and have it use the same inventory.  Unless...  You use a discount code instore to reduce the price at the time of sale.   The modifier will not work.  It would be best to create to seperate items but you will have to manually monitor the inventory.
