Checking out and coming across an item not found

Sometimes, in the middle of checking out, I come across an item that is not in inventory. Perhaps it was entered incorrectly during the import.

Best I can tell, I need to go to the to Items list and create a new item, then go back to the register screen and charge for it.

Is there an easier way? I'm more interested in getting the customer checked out quickly.

If I do a custom charge, there does not seem to be a way to put any text in to describe the item.
