Changing the discount that appears at the bottom of an item

Is there a way to change what discounts appear at the bottom of an item? Currently the two discounts that are at the bottom of all items are rarely used, and most of the time on items that they wouldn't apply to. My staff keeps accidentaly hitting them so I would like to either change them to more appropriate discounts or remove them entirely.

Is there a way that I can change what discount appears at the bottom of a particular item? For instance currently on all products both the discounts that show at the bottom of the item are discounts that are rarely used, and never on the vast majority of the items they show up on. I'm having issues with staff constantly hitting them and not realizing it also. So if at all possible a way to remove that option would be great too.

Thanks for helping clarify, @RHatch. @LSGHFBKS, our Product Team is investigating more options with discount settings, but we do not have a specific timeline available for when these features may be added. Some other sellers brought up a similar issue in this thread: Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

The "Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?" thread is not the same or similar question that @LSGHFBKS posed. What LSGHFBKS is similar to my need for more flexibility in what discounts appear at the bottom of an item while ringing that item on Square POS. There seems to be no controls for what discounts are visible, limiting how many discounts are visible, and what order the discounts appear. Maybe there is a thread better explaining the the "what discounts, limits on # of discounts visible, and order of discounts".... but I have not yet found one and thus far it seems to be a very random and mysterious method for "bottom of an item" discount visibility. 🤔

No, you cannot change that.  The only thing you can do is add manager approval to the discount to prevent them from using it or change it to a variable discount.  Then it will not show up at all.  You will just have to enter the discount amount when you need it.

Variable discounts ($ / %) do not automatically appear? That's news (since I can't find anything in the written help guides as a reference), but helpful.

 

Not sure why the dev. team would build this logic into what discounts do and do not appear at the bottom of an item, but at least now I know. Thanks @RHatch for the noteworthy info.  🙂

+1'ing @LSGHFBKS's question/comment....

 

It's bananas there is not more control over which discounts appear at the bottom of an item being rung into Square POS. 🍌🍌🍌 It seems a mystery as to which discount(s) will be visible and what order they will be in. 🕵️‍♂️

 

Not looking for discounts on an item-by-item basis here... but I would think better control of what discounts are visible (even if it's a limit of the "top 6, top 8, top 10, etc." discounts page) would be an option provided to Admins.

This is disappointing that this question was originally asked in 2017 and Square has not corrected it yet.  I had a list of discounts but not all of them would appear on the app.  I just learned I could create automated discounts (I have some food that gets a 10% discount if you buy by the case).  And I have a 10% discount if you buy a matching collar/leash set.  This is great!  Since it's automatic, it would be nice if it did NOT show up then on the list of discounts.  Unfortunately, they are the first three to be seen and now I cannot select any other discounts.  Seems I would have to apply to the entire order and then remove them.  This seems like it should have been an easy fix, but still not done.  Along with other issues I've seen they've had over the years that still aren't done.  If anyone has figured it out or how to tag Square development, that would be great!

I'd be happy to pass this feedback on to our Product Team regarding removing the option for automatic discounts showing on your Discounts page on your app. However, I'm not aware of upcoming changes to this feature currently.

The majority of Sellers find having all discounts located on their Discounts page makes it easier to manage and update this information as required. 

 

So that I can better communicate your feedback with our team, what would be your preferred alternative location for automatic discounts be?

Hi Laurie and thank you for responding.

 

Yes, I would like to see all of the discounts when I select an item (except the automated ones because, well they're automated so you don't need to see them).  I had originally set up multiple percent discounts but then due to lack of room, they would not all appear.  So I thought I was being clever in that I deleted them and then created a generic percent discount and left it blank for the cashier to enter manually. But unfortunately, Square removed it from the item list and it's only visible to the entire order/cart which is NOT what I want. 

 

So under settings and discounts - the automated discounts would be there, but they don't need to be listed under an individual item when ringing it up.  That would save room for other (non-automated) discounts to appear under the item when adding it to the cart. 

 

I hope I'm explaining myself correctly.

I've got a clear idea of what you're asking for now so I can pass this on to our Product Team. It sounds like the main issue is the limited display of the full range of discounts that could be applied to an item. 

In testing this myself, there isn't a workaround I can suggest at this time, but I have run this by my team as well just to see if there are any quick fixes in the meantime. I'll loop back to you either way with an update in this thread!

Unfortunately, there aren't any current workarounds we can offer at this time to override the system default when displaying available discounts that can be applied to an item.

I've noted your specific feedback and have passed this on to our Product Team. While I don't have a timeline I'm able to offer you here, if we do see changes here, we'll be sure to update you in this thread.
