When I see my list of customers there are a bunch of emails that say these clients are reachable. Can you not reach customers by text also? How does it save this information? And does it just save credit card customers or cash also? We are trying to reach a customer that paid cash and received their receipt by text but it doesn't show any information on the receipt. Thanks
Hi @PVS
Reachable Customers are the people in your directory that you can contact by email.
Square automatically adds profiles to your Reachable Customers, but only when they meet the following criteria:
Unfortunately we can't disclose contact information belonging to customers without their direct consent.
For future reference, you can ask for customer contact information and add it directly to the sale or your Customer Directory, that information is accessible in your online dashboard anytime.

ok I kind of got that but your part that says "Unfortunately we can't disclose contact information belonging to customers without their direct consent" seems contrary to what you just said before which is square automatically adds the client if they meet the criteria listed and I don't see anything there about consent? And also why would this not apply to phone numbers that receive a text message receipt? Many people prefer text so seems like this same option should be available and also why not cash sales that receive a receipt? Again, it somewhat inconsistent. I can see emails but not phone numbers.
@PVS I'm happy to clarify here.
For the Reachable Customers that Square adds, you won’t be able to see customers’ email addresses for these types of profiles, but you can reach them through a Square Marketing campaign or Direct Messaging from your online Customer Directory.
So the contact information is never disclosed to you. You're not able to see emails or phone numbers unless you add them yourself to your customer directory. Check out our Privacy and Security Policy for more clarification.
Being able to contact customers via text message is a popular feature request, but it's not something that's available at this time.
Check out this existing thread on this topic:
Can we use text messaging for marketing instead of e-mail? Most of my customers give phone # only.
hmm, I'm able to see many of the email addresses but we ourselves have never added them to square except to send a receipt so does that just mean at some point prior somewhere they gave square permission to show their email address? Not all are visible but a good many and again we have never entered any customer information into square directly.
Any visible email addresses will belong to the customers that were manually added to the Customer Directory. Check out the "Added by you" smart group in your directory to view all of these customers.
You are right most people prefer text and
if we are not avaliable to see their email from our directory, why are we goint to take the time to ask for it?
we are giving free information to square, you know the value of each email we give to square,
square is getting free information from our customer and they are charging us for the service, if we are giving them the information for our customer, we should have less commission taken from them to us
that is my oppinion but also I prefer send text receipt to my customer intead of sending them a email.
Hey @Guapo, if you enter an email address to your customer directory you will be able to view it under "Added by you" as @_EJ mentioned above.
