Can I manage inventory with a barcode scanner?

I've recently added a barcode scanner and love it for the checkout process but am wanting to also use it to manage and verify my in stock inventory. Is there a way I can use it for this purpose? I'm thinking scanning a barcode, seeing what the inventory counts should be, and verifying that against what's actually on the shelf.
