Transactions that include taxable and non- taxable items:
When a discount is added, it affects the sales tax because the discount is spread evenly to all items which creates false reports; I’d like the ability to declare if the discount applies to one item or to the entire ticket.
Toggling “apply to post-tax amount” does not apply here as it then over collects sales tax and is still fraud…
example 1-
haircut $28 (non-taxable)
hairspray $22 (taxable)
sales tax $1.82
Discount $2 (for the hairspray)
result=
Haircut $27
hairspray $21
sales tax $1.74
But it SHOULD be:
haircut $28
hairspray $20
tax $1.65
This is also an issue when I want to Discount the service only.
The result SHOULD be:
haircut $26
hairspray $22
sales tax $1.82
It is a small amount per transaction but adds up over the year and inaccuracies with the government and taxes is not a good idea…. Please help!
Thanks in advance!
I would apply the discount on an item basis rather than applying a discount to the sale in general. when you click on the item in the cart the discounts you have created are at the bottom that you can add. This way the discount is not being spread across all the items.
From what I have tried and have seen in these forums, when you apply a $$ amount discount it can not be applied to an Item, only the Total sale Price. The % discount can be applied to an Item. Unless I am doing something wrong. If you can apply a $ discount to an item can you please explain this it would help me and a lot of others out.
Square basically thinks since its a $ discount it does not matter how the Discount is applied. Until this Question was presented I did not have an example to give why this would be necessary. The other thing Square has pointed out is that when I give a $ off discount for buying 12 Candles ( ie buy 12 get 1 free) a slight $$ is applied to each of the 12 candles so that if a customer returns 1, they do not get the full value. I argue if they Return 1 of the 13, then they should not get the Free candle, which is applied as a $ discount = to the Price of that candle size ($20.99)
I am hoping your are right and I am just missing a step or some check box.
Thanks for pointing that out. This is one of the problems I run into in the fact that we only use Square POS for 3-4 months a year April thru July and I forget the little things like that. You are correct that you can't take $ off in the discounts on specific items. I just quickly looked and saw the discounts and posted. I guess given that you could still apply the discounts on individual items but you would need to calculate ahead what percent that is equal to and create it (not ideal or may even be viable if it is on all items but as with a lot of Square it is a possible workaround). @Candlestore Sorry for getting your hopes up with my answer that wasn't correct.
