3rd party tender type - money comes in later, attached to order, via square payments API

How can we use a new tender type in square where transactions could be rung up without needing a credit card? The order would be titled “3rd Party payment” and then that company would send the money by square payments api?

Hey @Espressly-

Thanks for posting in the Seller Community.

You can customize your checkout screen by toggling and reordering what Payment Types are available at checkout. To do so:

  1. Select the menu icon in the navigation bar.
  2. Tap Settings > Payment Types.
  3. To rearrange, drag and drop by tapping on the three horizontal lines next to the Payment Type name.
  4. Tap the toggle button on the right of the Payment Type to add or remove it from your checkout screen.
  5. Use the Preview button at the top of the screen to preview your new checkout screen.

One of these options will be Other Tender which may be able to be used as your 3rd-party payment type. No funds are actually processed when a payment is entered as cash or other tender – even if the card was swiped, and we’re not able to process these transactions as payment card information was never actually entered into our system. Would that be helpful? Let me know.

OK, so I could introduce an Invoice type of payment button at checkout...that way Square closes out the ticket in the system and the receipt prints...right? Would be same effect as using credit card...but just would not charge a card (and would label it different)....

Can I use Invoice or another method like this AND rename it to something custom?

Let's say I wanted to call it "Mobile Scan"

Could I do that?

Hey @Espressly-

We don't have a way to add custom payment types. It's a feature request that we may be developing and launching in the future, but do not have that option right now. Sorry about that. I will let you know if I hear any updates about this feature.

But yes, you can print receipts even if the payment method is "Other Tender".

We don’t want a custom payment type. We want to use Invoice payment option and rename it. Can we?

Hello 👋@Espressly.

You are not able to rename an Invoice once it has been sent out or the name "Invoice" to something else in the system. This is a feature request that's not available at this time. If anything changes we will make sure to update you here.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

What would be the best and smooth this method for a café to use square for all its magic, use square processing, But also have orders sort of applied to an account that would be paid later but it would have all the detailed accounting?

to be able to easily select this method when placing the order in the iPad app and have everything right and organized but without disrupting the normal flow if it’s not that type of order.

Hi there @Espressly. At this time, this is a feature request. I would suggest speaking to one of our Customer Success Advocates in our Square for Restaurants department. They may have additional suggestions based on your type of business.
