It may be a different issue but I had a similar problem. The reason was I didn’t have any balance in my Square account to cover the refund so had to wait until another order came in which then enabled the refund to go through.

Hi @Paul_in_Yorks, thanks for your post. Your Square account balance will be used to cover the amount of the refund and your bank account will be debited for any remaining amount needed. If we were unable to recover the remaining amount, the refund can fail. You can learn more about Square's refund process in our Support Center.
