Why do I suddenly have a Square account?

I don't remember signing up for this, but I got an email today saying it has been 60 days.

What companies is Square affiliated with?  Did one of them sign me up?

Ebay?  Paypal?  Amex?

do you have a weebly wesite?  that's the only square association I know of. and if you don't have a square account, how is it you are posting here?

No.  Never heard of weebly.  
I had to reset password to get in, since I had never been here before.
I have no previous emails from Square.  No "Welcome to Square" or anything like that.

So bizarre.

Thanks.  Today's email indicated that I opened the account 60 days ago.  Pretty sure I didn't.

So I got an email today, saying it had been 60 days since I started with Square.
I posted a question, asking how did I suddenly have this account, when I don't recall signing up for Square, and now the post says it has been moved or I don't have access to it?
This company sure seems shady.
What is going on?

Oh, maybe you should tell me that when I try to see the message.  It just says moved or I don't have access to it, and it doesn't come up when I search for it.
That would prevent me (and others) from posting new posts in the wrong spot over and over again.

Please log in to the online Square Dashboard to look over the details of this account. To sign in, you'll want to use the email address where you received this notification and you can utilize the "forgot password" link to create a new password - if you're not sure what this may be. 

Then, in the upper right corner, click on the clipboard icon to view your notifications. If you see a notification stating, “Activate your account to take payments” - this indicates that the account is not fully activated. Oftentimes, we see accounts created by accident.

Okay, thanks.  Obviously, I had done half of that, or I couldn't comment on this board.  
I see account is not fully activated, but I'd sure like to know how it even got partially activated without my knowledge.
When you move a post, you should provide a link to the new location.  That would be extremely helpful.

Also just an FYI, please beware of Phishing emails, not just from "Square" but for other companies too. I've gotten emails from "PayPal" claiming something was wrong with my account and had me click a button. Never do this and give out any personal information if you are unsure of the sender.

I just want to know how I suddenly got an account.  I received an email this morning, saying it had been 60 days.  I have no previous emails from Square, and don't recall ever opening an account.  I only sell online.  Isn't Square for in-person sales?

Hello, this happened to me too! I found your thread by googling "why do I suddenly have a Square account?" I know your question is 2 years old but I'm wondering if you ever got a clear answer about why it happened to you?

 

I only know about Square because some of the stores I shop at use Square to take my credit card payment and I put my email address in to get my receipts emailed to me. But I have never created a Square account.

 

Now suddenly in March 2023 I started receiving emails from Square as if I had a merchant/seller account with them. These are legit emails from Square, not phishing emails. They are from [email protected]. The subject line says "Updates to your Square Account" and the emails inform me that: "As a reminder, there will be an upcoming changes to Square’s refund policy, as well as updates to Square’s terms of service, all of which will be effective as of April 11, 2023. Processing fees will no longer be refunded to your account when you issue full or partial refunds to your customers. You do not need to take any action and there will be no change in the experience for your customer."

 

I have no idea what they're talking about as I have no customers. I am not a merchant and have never created a Square account of any kind. I have no emails from Square that you normally receive when you create an account, so zero records of ever creating an account with them.

 

I went to their help pages (help for merchants) and decided to click "forgot password" which enabled me to create a password to an account that already existed. I'm in my dashboard now (at https://squareup.com/dashboard/) and there doesn't seem to be any activity that I can see but I'd sure like to know how and why an account was created for me. It only has my first name, no last name, and my email address. 

 

Does anyone have any insight?
