Beware Verizon

Yesterday Verizon completely wiped out my Square account!  I don’t know how they got my card info but not only did they clean it out, the “view all activities” show where they attempted to charge $1000, $2000 & $3000. Luckily I didn’t have that much in my account!  But they DID get almost $1000.

I’ve contacted Verizon and they said they didn’t even have any billing info on me!!  Hmmmm strange I know.

I have to wait 3 days for their “investigation” to see if they are going to refund my money.
Secondly, Square offered me another loan, but I’m afraid to accept it. Will the loan be deposited if I lock my card? Can I transfer the amount from my Square to my Cash App?
I know I need to have my Square card replaced, but how can I tell if the money was taken by them having my card number or my account and routing number?  Because if they have my account and routing number, then a new card won’t really help

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi @Cloakmack , it appears that your card was compromised or spoofed. Did you recently lose the card? If so it was probably stolen from wherever you last used it to try to buy a bunch of stuff from Verizon.

I don't think this is so much a beware Verizon moment as an always keep track of your cards and check balances and transactions daily.  I'm not very familiar with Square Checking accounts but I strongly advise keeping most of your assets in a savings account until you need to perform a transaction. It makes things more of a hassle but helps to protect your checking account assets.

Definitely report the transactions as fraudulent, as far as them having your card versus account and routing number the verizon charges were most definitely via your card. The only thing they could do with a account and routing would be to do ACH withdrawals and that would require more detailed information. When in doubt you should change your Square password and use something unique to avoid your account getting compromised from another site sharing the same password.

Best of luck, scammers and fraudsters are all over the place and unfortunately tech gives them a strong advantage of rarely getting caught.

The best solution is to just not have money, can't steal what I don't have!

My card was never lost or out of my possession. I’ve contacted Verizon and filed a fraudulent claim. However I’m more worried about the Square loan offer.  Will it go in my account with my card locked?

@Cloakmack ;

So do you have a Square Credit/Debit Card that has WiFi on it for Tap and Pay?

The reason I am asking this is my Business CC with WiFi (Tap and Pay) was scanned and the data was pulled form it that people tried to use.  I caught the fraud within 2 hours and had that card cancelled and the funds returned.  This was not a Square card it was a Business CC from another Bank.  I looked back on my security cameras and saw a female customer walking closely behind me and her hand was in her purse and she kept trying to get her purse close to my pocket where my wallet was.  She never had to physically have my card or see it.  So the card was never stolen or lost, nor did I use that card within the prior week.  So we are pretty sure it was her that stole the cc information.   I now have the wallets that block the tap signal.

@Cloakmack ;

then I would get ahold of the Square number on back of the card and see if that was used for the purchases at verizon.... may not be your name or account but that is the first place I would look.  Your account may not have been breached but that credit card could have been cloned without you ever knowing it.
