I have had the Square Register for a few month now. Until I recently had to reboot the terminal, my employee facing display has never timed out or "went to sleep" automatically. Now, after the reboot, The display settings only have a 1 minute, 5 minute and 10 minute timer. It is annoying when you are sitting at checkout desk and your display goes to sleep on you. Is there a way to disable the timer so that the display is always on? I'd prefer it always on during business hours and I manually touch button to turn on/off.
Thanks for your post @diywooddecor. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to disable the display timer but I'm adding your post to this thread where another seller has posted a similar request! If this feature is available in future we'll let you know here.
In the meanitme if you have any other feedback about how keeping the customer-facing display on at all times would help you please let us know so we can share that feedback with the Register team!

She didn’t say customer facing she said employee facing- and the one HUGE reason it needs to NEVER sleep is because online orders don’t come through or print print when the screen is sleeping.
Can we kick this up the line for a sooner addition to a longer time out period at least. 10 min is too short! It can't be that hard, or take that long, to just add 1, 3 or 5 hour timeout to the list of options already there. It is very annoying to have to watch the register reconnect everything while a customer is standing in front of you. We're about to start the busy holiday season. This is going to be even more of a PITA the next couple of months. I know there's other merchants out there wanting this to change that won't or don't know how to make their thoughts known to Square to change this where it works for a larger variety of types of merchants using this POS.
I understand your frustration, @ArtisansAtNewBo. We're continuing to advocate for the suggestions you leave with us here and appreciate you letting us know about the changes, and options you'd like to see.
It's been more almost 4 years, and this issue has not been updated yet? once the screen fall in asleep, the scanner does not wake the screen up, only by tapping on the screen to wake up. I'd also like the main screen stay on all the time. Is there an option to set it up, yet? Thanks
Hi there,
We're just starting out with Square for restaurants and I'm wondering if there is a way to keep the POS display on consistently. When the POS display turns off, the printer disconnects and most of the time it takes a while for it to reconnect - making the kitchen miss tickets.
Hey @teeze,
I moved your post to an existing thread where another seller asked the same question before.
It looks like we're tracking it as a feature request but there isn't a way at the time to turn off the display timer as mentioned in the Best Answer.
Ashley, is Square looking into disabling the display timer or allowing us as customers to extend the sleep/display timer? I face the same issue of having to wait for it to "wake up" before being able to complete a transaction. It's unprofessional and I'd love to see that change. Thanks
Elaine
I have wondered this for a while! It is highly irritating when I have to stare at the terminal for over a minute with the customer because it has to reconnect to the internet. It shouldn't be an incredibly hard task to only sleep the display and not the connectivity of the unit. I've been thinking about switching merchants just because of this. its been an issue for years and it doesn't seem as though anything will be done about it. As much as I like square it makes me look unprofessional when its a constant problem with my customers having to wait every single time they come in.
Yes, I am currently having this issue as well. It wasn't so bad when you could just swipe up on the terminal screen and it woke up but since I recently unplugged it to move it, it now goes completely out after 10 min and you have to restart the whole thing every time. Can we at least add a 1/2-1 hr time out function? 10 min just isn't long enough for those of us with slightly longer wait times between customers. I was excited about getting this register and several of the others in our market also use the register, which is why I got it. This time-out issue is a pain in the A.
This issue just began for us, square has got to fix this ASAP
Meanwhile, I think there is a workaround for the online order printing issue, which I am guessing is what makes this an urgent problem for many of us-
Run Square on any smart phone or tablet or square terminal to print online orders and just leave it always on and connected to the network (and toggle off printing online orders on the square register, else you will get double printing when register is awake)
It's obviously absurd that Square's overpriced, purpose-built hardware cannot do what a $30 Craigslist iphone (or probably android phone) can do.
Square, get it together! This sort of simple issue is just shameful!
i really ate that my new online orders don't print automatic if the register display is off
@Yazchannel I can understand your frustration. I recommend submitting a Feature Request so that the Square Hardware team is aware of your interests.
Important: When submitting a request, make sure to include the desired feature, and provide the details of how this feature will help your business succeed (how would you use it and what you expect from it).
Yes, this is a huge deal and needs to be remedied immediatly. I alwasy miss my online orders when the screen is sleeping!
use a mouse jiggler. this device is basically a linux computer under the hood. moving the mouse will trick it and make it appears as if the device is in use.
if you don't believe me, try it out with a normal USB-A mouse.
