Contactless reader not reading card

My contactless reader won't read a card that is placed near or on the reader. Only reads it if it is inserted.

Do you know which type of contactless card your customers are trying? Keep in mind that not all chip cards are contactless! 

You can accept Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Wallet, and contactless cards without having to dip the chip in the reader.

when I insert the chip card the reader won't read it unless I push it in and hold it.

Is there dust or anything else lodged in your Square Reader's card slot? You can clear debris from the card reader slot with a card reader cleaning card or a paper towel.
