Raising tip limits for Square for Retail sellers

Raising tip limits for Square for Retail sellers

I run a wine bar and wine shop combination, and chose to use Square for Retail for its inventory management features. Because of this we have to do quite a few work arounds to make the system also work for the bar side of our business. Recently, on two occasions, we've had customers try and leave the staff tips that exceed the limits set by Square. The first time a customer wanted to leave $300 on a $50 check as a gift to our staff because they were moving away. Then last night we hosted a private party and our customer wanted to tip the team 44% (super generous) which equated to $1,240 on a $2,820 check. Square will only allow the tip to be 50% of the total bill up to $1,000 on checks that are $200 or more, so we were not able to capture the full amount which is a huge disappointment to the staff, understandably. We learned that a work around is to split the check in half, running the same card twice for the charges and adding half of the given tip to each check. So that's an option, but it's not very professional of us to make our customers pay their bill in two parts for what should be one bill. There is a way to lift that limit on the Restaurant for Square side of things, can we get the same benefit on the Retail side please???

Hello @flightcleveland ,

Thank you for reaching out and providing some great insight. I agree with you! The tipping limit should not be limited, and I can see how your servers would be frustrated. That is not a professional look. At this moment this is not on the roadmap for the Retail Product Team.  We will keep an eye on this thread and will follow up if anything changes. I truly appreciate you reaching out and providing your input.

Thanks for responding to my post. I understand that there are probably far more pressing things that the Retail Team is working on, but this issue is creating fundamental unrest in my organization so I have to push the question. Is there not a way to simply raise the tipping limits? I feel like there should be a way to request that as the owner of the business/admin of the program for my organization, or perhaps there's an override code for the limits, so we can handle higher tips manually at our location. If there is no way around this for the foreseeable future, with no workaround offered, it may result in our company needing to look elsewhere for software with more flexibility.

The tip limit needs to be lifted!  I just had a catering job over 10k and they wanted to tip me and my staff 20%. But it only allowed up to a $1000.  Please raise the limit.  Everyone pays credIt card these days.

When is square gonna allow more than a $200 tip.  My business constantly loses money because I have to cover my employees tips.

I am in the pet grooming industry. I have several clients with several dogs that they get groomed at one time. They are huge tippers and were frustrated to see the tipping limit was $200. They wanted to tip us way more to show gratitude for the physical hard work and great handling we did with their pups but they informed me they could not time more than that. Please let us know when this will be something they fix in the future. It's embarrassing when the customer ask why I have a set limit on the tipping, when in reality I don't but Square (a service I pay for) does.

Had a customer leave a $20 dollar tip, on a $20 dollar tab. I am unable to process it. This is ridiculous.
