Feature Request: Option to Create Invoice with Zero Balance

Feature Request: Option to Create Invoice with Zero Balance

Because I use square to track my inventory, I need to be able to create an invoice that has a zero balance (for a few reasons).  First, if I am donating product, I need to track that through square. I also want a hard copy record of this donations.  Secondly, if I do a product trade with someone, I want to indicate that on my invoice (again to track my inventory). When I have done this, square tells me that inovices need to be at least $1.  WHY???

Re: Feature Request: Option to Create Invoice with Zero Balance - Status changed to: Not currently planned

👋 Hello @sophiacoffee@agrishield@biggameink, and all the others who have stopped by to share this idea over the years. I understand how frustrating it can be to provide your product feedback and not hear back about the status. I am very grateful however, that @Leanna_CYB shared the following workaround:

"If you use the mobile app to “checkout” instead of creating an invoice, you can apply a pre-created comp to the item and it will allow you to check out with $0.  This is what I’ve been doing so that it will remove the item from my item library and the record will show in your Transactions.”

I can also confirm that this feature request is not currently planned by our Product team, so I am going to go ahead and change the status of the post and close it out. We will absolutely keep everyone posted here in the community if this decision changes. We really appreciate your patience and understanding, and please feel free to message me directly with any further questions!

We need to be able to charge an invoice at £0. Using Square POS is not a viable workaround for us because all our services are charged through Invoices - we need to track all our orders in one place and this is Invoices. We need to see the start and end points to each of our client orders and this is done through deposit payment (start), balance payment (end).

The issue I see with ringing up things as "comps" is that the Comps report lists the "Amount Comped" as the retail price for the item, not the cost of the item. When I'm looking at things that I've comped or donated, I'm more concerned with cost than price.

I bartered for services and even though the invoice will be a zero balance I want to track it. Track it for my records and track it to show the customer/business owner a zero balance receipt.

I have called, chated with and emailed Square about this topic. I have spent hours of my life trying to get an answer to how I can create an invoice and then comp it.

It is ridiculous how long it has taken me to get a simple answer to this issue. It is also ridiculous that this has been a need and a topic of discussion here since 2017 yet it has not yet been addressed. How hard can it be to implement?

It's really embarrassing to invoice a customer for $1 on a free service and then create a phony $1 cash payment to mark the invoice as paid. It makes Square look really unprofessional and when clients invariably ask what the deal is - why Square can't make a simple fix like this - I don't have an answer because none of us have received an answer.

Hi @RHatch

If a 'best answer' also marks an issue as 'solved' then I think this policy needs to be looked at by Square. In this example, I don't think your answer resolves the issue because it's still not possible to edit an invoice to $0 and the workaround to use POS instead is not workable for reasons explained in this thread.

As you can see, others in other territories need this functionality too so I hope Square implement a proper solution as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Similarly, we need a way of being able to keep an invoice that is paid in full ahead of the balance due date, open. This is because other items will need to be added to the invoice and then charged. Unless we can keep it open we can't add any more items as, currently, once an invoice is paid in full it becomes closed and can not be edited any further.

It appears that this has been a requested feature since the beginning of this topic back in ‎11-08-2017.

Why hasn't Square made this seemingly easy feature available in all that time?

Makes me second guess my choice of POS systems.

There is a workaround: if you use the mobile app to “checkout” instead of creating an invoice, you can apply a pre-created comp to the item and it will allow you to check out with $0.  This is what I’ve been doing so that it will remove the item from my item library.

and the record will show in your “Transactions.”

Hope that helps!

Hello @DogDaysRC,

Thanks for reaching out and checking on this request. We understand having to wait for features to be built out is extremely frustrating. Before we implement a feature we want to ensure that our releases are not just surface-level, but the best all-around resources to help you grow your business. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post (squ.re/Ideate-Commuity) from one of our Seller Community Moderators. Thank you @Leanna_CYB so much for that workaround in the meantime.

We will keep you updated here in our Seller Community. We appreciate your input! 🙂
