Whoa! What happened to sync between Square and Square Online

We used to have a setting that allowed us to designate that new items created in Square Dashboard would sync over to Square Online but would be marked "unavailable." That was great. It satisfied my way of working. I would create an Square dashboard. When I had time, I would go to Square Online and add a photo, description, categories and any other thing particular to online sales. THEN, I would mark it Visible.

 

Not, the bright product managers have given us only and option to have items automatically sync to Square Online and become available  (without photos, descriptions, categories, etc). or to have some other way to syncing that is totally unclear. So, you have to turn this option on.

 

Note, they rolled this out with auto sync turned off. HUH??? I had to call them to find out what the hell was happening with sync after items that I created in Square Dashboard hadn't shown up for three days.

 

Give us back the old option to sync automatically but with item Unavailable.

Hi @purplebutterfly@RobinM, @keicollective, @Thevioletfox and all. The Square Online team let us know this was not an intentional change and they are working to get it fixed. I know this is annoying and causing a lot of issues for you all, so hopefully this will be resolved soon. Thanks for your patience - I'll follow up here as soon as we have an update.

A work around for you is not to set the price, leave it empty until you are ready to go live. it will be marked unavailable online

Not a good solution if you have a store front and still need the item to ring up neither orice at register.

This is such an annoying update! I don't understand it at all. Sometimes when you're in "items" online there's a blue button at the top that you can click to import items from the storefront. It's not always there for some reason. It's adding an additional step, or several, and I don't understand why!

Giving this thread a bump since this is a major issue for us. Our business has thousands of items in inventory and not all of them are available online, so auto syncing things to be on the website doesn't work at all.

I'm assuming Square made this change in prep for something else that will be rolled out, but haven't seen any more info about it?  Need this changed back ASAP.

Same, same, same... I actually like the option to sync or not, because I have some back-end items that don't need to show up (though some notice would be nice--they've got no problem throwing pop-ups at us for every other thing), but I really don't want things showing up that I haven't added descriptions, images, shipping weights, etc to. And god help me if I get a Christmas thing shipped in February for later in the year, now that's on my front page :facepalm:

Has anyone discovered a solution to this? My items are not synching online. Somehow I was able to mark several of the items to visible and they showed up online for a short period of time and now they are missing again. I have spent hours trying to search for these items, edit them, and reupload them to figure out a solution with no luck yet.

I called in to the Customer Service and was directed to a new setting in Square Online / Items / Items Sync. Check the last option to Automatically add new items to this site. 

 

Good news: Most items will sync over (though I have one item I still can't locate) shortly after you create them in Square Dashboard. 

 

Bad news: They sync over as "visible."  Which means you need to go in and mark them "unavailable" if that's your preference until you have them ready for use online (photos added, descriptions, categories, modifiers, etc.) Plus I have some items I create in Square Dashboard I can't sell online and can't have them surface in search if they are "visible."

 

This option under Item Sync used to do EXACTLY WHAT I WANT. It used to say "Automatically sync items and make unavailable."  But that useful option has been eliminated by some unthinking product manager. RESTORE IT!!!

@purplebutterfly I couldn't agree more. "Automatically sync items and make unavailable" was so easy to find and get the listing ready before I received the product. I'm not sure why this was changed, but a notice would have been nice because I had to start several listings over because I couldn't find them- only to eventually find them in their new spot- and that was eventually... wicked frustrating.

Just want to put this out there. I have been adding items to my inventory every day for the past 4/6 weeks and everything is working the way it always has. It syncs to my website as unavailable until I make it visible. This is good since I need to add weight for shipping, everything else like pictures, description, vendor, cost, price, units can be added when I first set up in Items. Is there something I not seeing?

Is anyone else sometimes seeing the Add from Item Library option? It's not always on my Site Items page, so I have to refresh several times until I get it. AND it still adds the item as visible right away, instead of letting us add photos and weights and things first. So we're getting closer but still not quite it Square...

I see the button sometimes but it never works for me. It won't show anything in the library 😕. Life would be much easier if the sync between the Square library and the Online sites would sync bidirectionally.

Throwing in my vote to PLEASE restore the original sync settings! It’s a step backwards in terms of keeping things efficient if you have both square POS & square online.

@compassrose01 It didn't appear for a few days for me- after searching why the listings I had entered couldn't be found. I thought I was loosing my mind for a minute. It appears now, but it is an extra step and if I am making a listing similar to one I have in my list I can compare them.
