Which sales figure in Square is actually correct?

I have noticed a discrepancy in the figures reported by Square depending on where you look in the system.

For the moment I will avoid screenshots due to the nature of the information, however the figures provided by the Square sales reports, the tax reports and what is pulled out via the APIs are all different.

For example, take this as a baseline:

  • Square iOS App or Square Register
    • Reports -> Sales Reports
      • Select a month and look at the figure in a MONTHLY view. Then select the same month when looking at the YEARLY view (by touching the bar graph). Right off the bat, these figures will be different.

Next, look at the same months in the Reconciliation Report (Reports -> Accounting -> Reconciliation). These figures will be different than both of the Sales Report figures.

Next look at the Taxes reports (Reports -> Accounting -> Taxes). The figures reported here also do not match any of these other figures.

Finally, using the developer APIs, query the Square Orders API (POST /v2/orders/search) and manually sum every order during the same time period. This also returns different figures.

I first noticed this issue last year. When I raised it with Square at that time, I never received an explanation. About 2 weeks ago, I opened a new support case, but Support has again not shown much interest in investigating it.

For some reason, two different support agents have contacted me, but they do not appear to be coordinating with each other. One has asked me for the same information that I already provided when opening the case and has since stopped responding. The other suggested that the issue was related to my accountant, which I do not understand because the discrepancy exists entirely within Square’s own reports and APIs.

It has been 2 weeks since I opened the case with Customer Support and they have not responded.

At this point, I am sending daily requests asking for an update, however my experience says that they will not respond.

This is a fundamental error in the platform. Proven, factual and reproducible.
