I am trying to find a way to keep my COGS report accurate when sometimes I need to change what SKU things fall under.
I have living inventory (fish and plants). So sometimes a small angelfish grows into a medium one. Or I want to move a guppy for a particular strain into the "assorted guppies". But I am not going to keep track of that specific individual to see when it sold.
A way to think about it with the guppies is that if someone sold jellybeans and SKU 1, 2, and 3 were colors. Say red, blue, and orange. While SKU 4 is "Assorted", when you get low on SKUs 1 and 2 adding the reds and blues to the assorted group and possibly ordering Purple to be SKU 5. The extra beans in assorted weren't free and the ones moved off of SKUs 1 and 2 weren't lost. But I also am not keeping track if the reds or blues sold first from the assorted pool.
Is there a way to get Square to move the cost of one item into the cost of another? Or at least remove the "cost" from the first SKU without counting it as a loss and attribute it to the new SKU without the system thinking I "bought" it again.
I don't expect Square to be able to track that its a thing I did. I just want to keep by COGS reasonably accurate (FiFO for the COGS report is still good enough even if the ones added to another sku don't quite sell in that order).
The issue of them growing can sometimes work if I change the name and sell price of a SKU. But sometimes the size group already exists and I'd want to pool them into one SKU.
For one set I put all the items in one SKU with a price that is the "adult/full size price" with notes to do price adjustments for younger/smaller individuals. We're an in person store so its doable, but a pain. Although as I write this out perhaps I could use modifications here....
Still, any tips and tricks for inventory that doesn't always stay as the same "item", so to speak?
