Customer Display for Stand

Hi there!

I'm sure this has said before but I didn't find anything on this in this Beta thread so I'm saying it here.

I (and many other sellers on the regular square community) would love a customer facing display for the square stand. Customers prefer to see their total as I am adding items and like to see how much each item costs and what their running total is. This is especially true when you have a sale going on as customers want to see the final price of an item before and after the discount. While I could just spin around the stand to show them at the end, customers often want to know their total or how much an item turns out to as I'm ringing them up and if they are buying several items, I don't want to keep spinning around the stand every time they ask.

I am aware that Square is testing a version of a customer display for the stand but there are a couple of issues with it:

The only supported customer display is another ipad. I really don't want to buy a whole other $320 ipad just to use it's screen. I have a semi old android tablet lying around so I would love to use that or at least let us connect a monitor. I don't see why the same ipad in the stand can't feed a simple customer display interface into an external display connected through the stand's hub. I'm sure it won't be too expensive to sell an HDMI to USB adapter for any seller that wishes to connect a monitor for a customer display. Or square could offer a new hub with an HDMI port.
The current customer display option is connected via wifi and has to be set up again if either device locks or leaves the square app. A wired connection would be much better.
I couldn't even get this to work on my ipads and I followed all the instructions and troubleshooting steps.

I also don't see why the stand can't just support the square register's customer facing display.

I currently use a lightning to HDMI adapter to mirror my ipad's screen onto a customer facing monitor and although not the perfect solution, I find that it helps and customers really appreciate it. They can see their cart, item prices, discounts, tax, and total without interrupting my flow.

If square adds support for a wired customer display for the stand, I would definitely purchase the stand.

I think this is a more than fair request, and appreciate your raising it. We get a lot of visibility to Feature Requests here in the Beta Community, and I'm happy to make sure this is escalated.

A lot of people have chosen to move to the Square Register for a long term solution for this, but I do think that using the display or creating a display that would work like the registers front facing display through USB integration could be an interesting solution.

I'll let you know if we have any shareable information form this request in the future.

I currently tried using an old android tablet and cell phone. Had to download an app (AirScreen) from the google play store. This was able to be installed on the Android tablet and cell phone, just used the Ipads screen share command or whatever it is ( I am more and Android person) This worked well on some of my Android devices but my new Samsung FE20's screen would either have a lot of black on the sides (4x3 screen) or when I chose to fill Screen could not see the 3 ... at the top or the cents for any transaction. Now an old RCA tablet 11" screen or a 8" Tab A showed the display fine. My customers liked it but would go to sign the Display only screen when using these. Was a pain to have these there that could not capture a signature, and having to rotate the Square Stand.

Now having tried this and getting it to semi work, would it be possible to use the screen from Register to show pricing and capture a signature, or an APP that could be place on an older Android device that can communicate the signature to the Square Stand? The $300 (+/-) for a display IPAD is a little steep, but you can get cheap Androids in 8" or 10" screens for around $100 and I am not sure if the Display Screen with signature abilities pricing to compare.

Just my 2 cents from getting a WIFI screen share to work with my Square Stand.

I did not see a Display screen setting in my Square app, but have not really been in settings either for awhile.

We have the square registers and they have a customer display. It would be nice to have a stand or mount for that to keep it in place and could possibly be built into our cash wrap.
