limit purchase to one per week per customer

Is there a way to automatically limit an item purchase to one per customer per week? Thought maybe I could use the Customer Directory, but I don't want to search the transactions to see if they purchased the item the previous week. Was hoping that I could set a flag of some kind that would notify me if a customer had previously purchased the item the week before as I am trying to limit quantity purchased.

Welcome back! 

You can't limit the amount of times a customer can purchase your items. 

Instead of searching through your transactions - you can add that customer to the transaction. This would allow you to bring up their purchase history in one place.
