Hmm. If you want to make sure your reader can accept cards, then you can swipe one but not complete or cancel the transaction.
After inputting a dollar figure and choosing your payment method you have to additionally hit charge or tender (if taking cash) before the sale goes through.
If you can spare a buck you can always complete a full transaction for $1 (the least you can charge), let it process and then refund it back to yourself so you know how that process works as well.
