I do not have a business and do not use Square and literally registered an account to get rid of this and still can't find the option.
More than once, I have now been put on mailing lists of Square-using companies after swiping my debit card. I did not give any consent to give them my email address and did not want to be put on a mailing list for some random company I visited once. TBH this feels like such a violation that even though the service was fine, I REALLY do not want to go back there again and risk getting signed up a second time.
Firstly, this should 1000% be an opt-in. But if you absolutely must forcibly put me on a list, give me an option to unsubscribe not just from that company's mailing list, but from any additional companies also forcibly collecting my email address and putting it on another unwanted list.
My email is used 100% professionally and I do not want mailing lists AT ALL, EVER. If I care about a company I will follow them on social media. Please do not subscribe random customers to random mailing lists without their consent just because I bought an ice cream one time.
Hi @chlorinesea - Sorry to hear about the trouble. To clarify, there is an option to unsubscribe from all merchants who use Square Marketing. To do so, you would just need to follow these steps:
You should be good to go from there.
You should REALLY make this an opt-in, not an opt-out. Literally zero people want to be forced onto a mailing list, you're just annoying and upsetting people, not reaching an audience who actually cares. If it's an opt-in then you're only mailing people who want to be mailed and maintaining good relations with those of us who don't want to be spammed.
Thanks for the response regardless, I'm still pretty freaked out that companies are getting my email from my debit card, that's skeezy as heck, you guys. You're doing a good thing for small companies, please don't veer into this kind of creepiness.
Thank you for your feedback here! To clarify, when you enter your email for a digital receipt, you are consenting that it be used by the merchant you visited for marketing purposes. This is stated on the receipt screen (see screenshot) and also outlined in our Privacy Policy.

I do hear you on the opt-in vs. opt-out portion though and making sure that merchants are only reaching customers who are listening. I will definitely bring it up to our Marketing team to consider for future improvements.
