Do I need to enter an EIN if I only have contractors on Square Payroll?

[The title of this thread has been edited from the original: EIN and Contractor-Only Payroll]

I'm trying to set up to do Contractor-Only Payroll, and it looks like I'm being required to furnish an Employer Identification Number (EIN). But according to https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/do-you-need-an-ein I shouldn't need one if I don't have employees. How can I proceed without an EIN?

Hi @Dan_C-

Thanks for posting in the Seller Community.

Yes, at this time we require an EIN to sign up for a Square Payroll account. Since we file the 1099-MISC, we need to have an EIN on file. This is the required information for a contractor-only account. I hope this has been helpful!
