What's New From Square: August Features Coming Soon (Volume 9)

Hey Square Community,

A few weeks ago, we rolled out Volume 8, and the response has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, asked questions, and helped other sellers navigate the changes.

We're rolling out a wave of new features and improvements across payments, inventory management, kitchen operations, and device management. Some are live now, and the rest will be fully available by August 6.

This is Volume 9. Here's what's new.

Inventory Management

Customize barcode label layout and content 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

Additional label sizes, font styles, font sizes, and field options are now available when creating labels from Square Register. Sellers can choose what appears on each label and how the content is organized, giving more control over the final printed output.

Why it matters: Retailers printing barcode labels from the register have been limited to a single layout with fixed content. That forces workarounds — hand-writing extra info, printing from a separate system, or settling for labels that don't match the store's needs. More layout and content options mean labels can include the right details at the right size without leaving the register.

Access: Available on Square Register for sellers on the Plus plan. Label options appear when creating labels from the device.

Payments & Checkout

Accept EBT/SNAP payments at checkout 🇺🇸

Eligible sellers in the US who hold valid USDA FNS authorization can accept SNAP EBT as a payment method directly through Square, including in carts that mix EBT-eligible and non-eligible items. Square automatically splits the tender and adjusts taxes accordingly, with no manual work needed from the seller. Available in Retail mode on Square Register, Square Handheld, or Square Terminal.

Why it matters: Grocery stores, farmers markets, and other food retailers serving SNAP-eligible customers have had to use a separate terminal or turn those customers away entirely. Accepting EBT through the same system that handles card and cash payments removes the need for extra hardware and keeps checkout moving for every customer in line.

Access: Available now in Retail mode on Square Register, Square Handheld, or Square Terminal. Sellers need valid USDA FNS authorization. Terms apply.

Menu & Kitchen Operations

Align prep times across stations on Kitchen Display System 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

Staggered item prep times on the Kitchen Display System now account for the entire order, not only the items visible on each station's screen. Stations with quick items wait to fire so the whole order finishes together. If a longer dish finishes early or is removed, waiting stations receive an orange alert to start right away.

Why it matters: A grill station working a 12-minute steak and a salad station prepping a 2-minute side need to land at the pass at the same time. Previously, each station only saw its own prep clock — so the salad fired immediately and sat wilting while the steak finished. Order-wide awareness means every station fires at the right moment, and the kitchen sends complete orders to the table together.

Access: Automatic for any Kitchen Display System device that already has staggered item prep times turned on. No additional setup required.

Reorder modifier sets on Kitchen Display System 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

Sellers can set a custom display order for modifier sets on a per-item basis from Square Dashboard. The chosen sequence applies to both Kitchen Display System screens and Kitchen Display System printed tickets, so modifiers appear in the same position on every ticket regardless of the order they were rung in on Square Point of Sale.

Why it matters: Kitchen staff reading tickets quickly rely on position — protein first, then temperature, then sauce. When modifiers appear in a different order depending on how the server rang them in, the line cook has to scan the whole ticket to find what they need. A fixed display order means the team reads every ticket the same way, every time.

Access: Available in Square Dashboard for sellers on the Plus plan. Set modifier display order on a per-item basis from the item's modifier configuration.

Operations & Device Management

Add more applets to the Point of Sale bottom navigation 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

Sellers can customize the bottom navigation bar in Square Point of Sale by adding applets that were previously accessible only through the More menu. This gives direct, one-tap access to frequently used tools without navigating away from the main screen.

Why it matters: Staff who regularly use tools like timecards, cash management, or reports have been tapping into the More menu dozens of times a day. That extra step adds up during a rush. Pinning those tools to the bottom bar puts them one tap away — right where the team already looks.

Access: Available now on Square Point of Sale. Customize the bottom navigation bar from the device settings.

Choose how identical items appear in the cart 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

The "Consolidate identical items in the cart" setting controls whether the same item added multiple times merges into a single line on Square Point of Sale. Turning it off shows each item on its own line, so staff can open and modify an individual item without splitting a grouped line first. The setting is configurable per mode.

Why it matters: A bartender adding three of the same beer wants a quick quantity count. A retail associate ringing up three of the same shirt in different sizes for gift wrapping needs each one accessible individually. One default never fits both workflows. Per-mode control lets each selling environment display the cart the way that matches how staff actually work with it.

Access: Available now on Square Point of Sale. The setting is configurable per mode from the device settings.

Quick printer setup hidden when printer profiles exist 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

The quick setup option for printers only appears when no printer profiles exist. Sellers who already have profiles assign one directly to a new printer — quick setup no longer creates default profiles that conflict with an existing configuration.

Why it matters: Sellers with carefully configured printer profiles have accidentally run quick setup on a new printer, which generated a default profile that overrode or conflicted with their existing routing. Hiding the option when profiles already exist removes that risk entirely.

Access: Automatic. Sellers with existing printer profiles see the direct profile-assignment option when adding a new printer.

Reopen and edit paid checks on Square for Restaurants for Android 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸

Sellers at locations with the "Reopen and Keep" check settlement setting turned on can reopen a recently paid check straight from the order's details, add or edit items, and either keep it open or close it again. The updated total settles against the card authorization from the original payment — no need to bring the customer back or re-collect their card.

Why it matters: A server realizes a dessert was left off the check after the guest already paid. Previously on Android, the only option was to void the payment, track down the guest, and re-run the card — or eat the cost. Reopening the check and settling against the existing authorization fixes the ticket without disrupting the guest or requiring a new transaction.

Access: Available now on Square for Restaurants for Android. The "Reopen and Keep" check settlement setting must be turned on at the location level.

See new releases and schedule installs right from Point of Sale and Dashboard 🇺🇸

The What's New section highlights upcoming and recently launched features and is now available on Square Point of Sale in addition to Square Dashboard. Sellers can choose to schedule when new updates install.

Why it matters: Updates that install during a lunch rush or right before a big event cause unwanted downtime. Seeing what's coming and choosing when it installs gives sellers control over their own schedule — updates land when the business is ready, not when the system decides.

Access: Available on Square Point of Sale and Square Dashboard. The What's New section appears automatically.

🎉 Your Feedback in Action

These updates are a direct result of feedback and feature requests shared across the community! Here's how the Community helped shape what we're launching:

Customize barcode label layout and content: Sellers have been asking for more control over printed labels for years — from wanting a customization suite for barcode label creation to simply being able to print labels without a price on them. Now you can choose additional label sizes, font styles, font sizes, and field options directly from Square Register, so labels carry the right details at the right size. Shoutout to @TropicalImports @JoyOne @lux_pos @cigarguy @eharter @Mumu  and @hoobyu81 for raising this!

Accept EBT/SNAP payments at checkout: This one goes all the way back to 2016, when sellers first asked whether Square would ever accept EBT payments. Grocers told us they were losing customers every day and juggling a second terminal to serve them. Eligible US sellers with valid USDA FNS authorization can now accept SNAP EBT directly through Square — including carts that mix EBT-eligible and non-eligible items, where Square splits the tender and adjusts taxes automatically. Shoutout to @MichaelJMutch @StricksMeats @FourCornersMeat @Grocerystore @143Jerrywhite @grocerybabu and @ncardenny for championing this!

Reorder modifier sets on Kitchen Display System and printed tickets: Kitchen teams told us modifiers showed up in a different order on the KDS than they were arranged on the POS, so line cooks had to scan the whole ticket to find what they needed. You can now set a custom display order for modifier sets per item from Square Dashboard, and that order applies consistently across KDS screens and KDS printed tickets. Shoutout to @SVLFever @ldeespancakes @babeastlansing @Porkchopzz4 and @TheRealChipA for surfacing this!

Reopen and edit paid checks on Square for Restaurants for Android: Sellers running Square Register and Handheld pointed out that reopening a closed check only worked on iPad, leaving them to void a payment and re-run the card when an item was missed. Now, at locations with "Reopen and Keep" turned on, you can reopen a recently paid check, add or edit items, and settle the new total against the original card authorization. Shoutout to @erichash and @KababAndCurry for asking for this!

See new releases and schedule installs right from Point of Sale and Dashboard: Sellers told us the What's New section in Dashboard didn't actually say what was in each app update, and that it's maddening when items move or functionality changes with no explanation. What's New is now available on Square Point of Sale as well as Dashboard, and you can schedule when new updates install so they land when your business is ready, not in the middle of a rush. Shoutout to @StuartC for flagging this!
