Square
[New] Create and sell Bundles for Retail

Hi sellers! 👋

We’re excited to announce that we’ve added the ability for Square for Retail Plus sellers to create and manage Bundles in Square Dashboard! This feature allows you to combine multiple components into one item bundle and sell those items together while still having the ability to track inventory of the individual components. This is great for all types of retail sellers that want to create gift sets, product sets and can even be used with Square Subscriptions.

This update can help you:

  • Better track inventory of individual components regardless of how you sell the items
  • Increase sales and AOV by cross-selling and upselling of similar products to your customers
  • Create promotional products around special events and holidays

Where can I create product bundles?

  • Bundle creation can be accessed when creating a new item in your Square Catalog
  • A new option will be listed called “Sell as a bundle”

Who can access product bundles?

  • This feature is available in all regions and will only appear for Square for Retail Plus sellers. We’ll also be adding this feature for Square Online Plus sellers sometime later in August.
  • If you're a Square for Retail Plus subscriber and this feature isn't showing up for you, check back again early next week (7/31) as it will be fully available to everyone then

Comment below with your feedback on this feature and let us know what kind of bundles you’re creating! Check out the Square Support article as well for more information.

@mkochanowski ;

So is this feature LIVE for all users of Square for Retail Plus?    Just asking because I was in the Beta test for this and have seen many questions that could be answered in the forums with this but was in Beta Testing.  So before I suggest to other users that this is available with Square for Retail Plus..... I wanted to make sure with the Latest version of Square for Retail Plus this IS available to everyone.

Thanks in advance.

Square

Hi @Candlestore this feature is available to MOST sellers right now. By next week Monday (7/31), all Square for Retail Plus sellers should have access to this feature.

Let us know if you have any questions here and we're happy to answer them. We also included an updated FAQ section in the Square Support article.

Will this be available in a restaurant setting? I looked through old threads and it has been a popular request since 2016.

In a restaurant setting, customers could choose a meal bundle, and then choose their burger, side and drink.

It seems like this bundling doesn't allow customers to choose what is included?

Square Champion

YAY!!!! I know we have all been waiting for this.  It is going to make Christmas bundling soooo much easier.  thanks!

Square

That's a great question! You're correct in that the current bundling feature does not allow customers to choose the items that are included at this point. This is an enhancement that we're investigating and hope to add in the future.

We're also looking at creating a similar bundling feature for food & beverage sellers in the future. Stay tuned and be on the lookout for more info on this.

So helpful! 🎉

is this available for square appointments? i sell a lot of retail and would love to be able to track my inventory better!

it was marketed to me in my square program which is why i am asking, idk what retail plus is lol

Square Champion

Square for Retail Plus is the Subscription base Square for Retail to better track inventory and some other advanced features such as Item Bundles.

What features are available in the different Square Pos systems :

Hi @erinreyehair - regarding the availability of this feature with Square appointments, we currently do not allow bundles to be sold on the Appointments POS currently but is something that we're looking into. If you do utilize either Square POS or SO, you should have access to sell a bundle on those surfaces.

@Candlestore provided a great link with all of the Retail Plus features. It's possible you account had an affiliation with a Retail subscription at some point and that's why you received messaging about this feature.

Let me know if you have any other questions about bundles!

I cannot begin to express how happy I am to see this feature finally become available.   Combined with "Sell by Units" it really opens up a lot of possibilities.

That being said, I do have a suggestion/question/complaint about bundles.  It would be VERY useful if we could create bundles as variations under an item.

I can easily see myself creating DOZENS of bundles.  Being able to use an Item Name like Wine Basket, Cocktail Kit, Beer Basket etc... and then having all of the different bundles as variations of those items would make for a much cleaner Item library.  Also, since it looks like there's no obvious way to differentiate bundles from regular items in a downloaded catalog, having them as variations would make keeping track of bundles that have been created much easier.

I'm also curious how sales information for sold bundles will be shown on reports?  I can see an obvious need to track sales performance of the bundles themselves, but I also wouldn't want the overall sales of individual components of a bundle to have skewed numbers as a result of being left out of say an item sales report when the sale was part of a bundle.

Square Champion

This is so great!! Thank you for implementing this. I can see this being great for services to be able to reduce operational inventory.

Can this bundle option be used for "services"? Can it be booked online? And is it available in Appointments?

Square

Hi @MAHughes - Thanks for the feedback here! I'm also curious on how you want to use this feature combined with sell-by units.

Regarding your feedback - using this feature along with item variations is something we're aware of an plan on addressing in the future. Stay tuned for more info on this.

For the reports, any of the individual items sold on their own will continue to show up on the sales and COGS reports the same way. Any bundles created and sold will now show as a new line item and will show the total combined revenue of just the bundles sold, or have the total combined cost of goods for the bundle components sold. We understand the need to be able to see the individual components broken down as part of the bundle sales and we hope to also add this in the future.

Let us know if you have any other feedback on this feature!

Square

Hi @Bronze_Palms - we currently don't support this feature being used within the Appointments POS today. For your application, are you tracking inventory as part of any of these services? Otherwise, you should be able to simply create a new service and label description with the a-la-cart services that are offered.

Let me know if you have some more details on your application and I'd be happy to share this with the team. Thanks!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've currently only set up about 10 bundles, but I'll probably set up about 50 bundles easily.

Here's how I'll be using them.

Cigarettes. My main unit is a pack, but I sell some cigarettes by the carton so I'll have bundles that are 10 packs in a carton. I also have lots of 10 packs of 50ml sleeves we sell on the regular

Alternate PLUs I have some items that I track that are the same item as far as I am concerned however they have more than 2 different bar codes. Like in some cases there's a wine bottle upc, then a box upc, then a gift package upc, etc.

Also it does appear that the bundles go both ways. So if a 4 pack of beer is my unit and I want to sell singles I can put .25 into the bundle.

So it would be nice if they were still within the same product. Especially if reporting wise they'll still be treated as a different items because at least that way I could put them as...

smirnoff regular 50ml

smirnoff regular 10 pack

Rather than

10 different smirnoff items

smirnoff regular 50ml units

35 other smirnoff 50ml units

15 other smirnoff items

smirnoff regular 10 pack

a whole bunch more 10 packs

35 other 10 packs

I didn't mean specifically combining the Bundles with Sell-By Units ... just that the 2 new features both open up possibilities.

Unfortunately not having the components of a bundle show up on any sales reports when sold as part of a bundle make the feature difficult to use.  If I sell 50 of some item as components of bundles I need to be able to see that information so I know I need to reorder that Item.   On the Inventory Sell-Through report, the bundles don't even show up as having been sold, so I can't even manually adjust the sales of the component items based on how may bundles sold.

Where is the Update list for what changes were made to version 6.22.2 of Square for Retail?

Noticed No Sale (Open Cash Drawer is now missing)

Employee Name No longer printed on Receipt

I use to Clock in with my owner pin to track my hours, then Login with a Store Pin but not Clock in.  Now I can not Log in without Clocking in.... Since I saw employee name no longer on receipt maybe this is why?

I can not enter Starting Amount for a Cash drawer that is connected through Network Receipt Printer (Printer Driven Cash Drawer)

Cash Drawer not Started Message is also now gone, and I am unable to start my Cash Drawers opening start amount. This might be because my cash drawer is not showing at all, but never did before and still opens when I press Test Cash Drawer on a Square Retail Ipad Stand device.

I came here since it says Product Updates looking for answers on how to adjust these things.  Yesterday I contacted support for a problem with My Square Stands not giving me a Receipt Screen option..... was told to adjust this in Square for RETAIL Green and white Icon for app I had to change the settings in Square POS Grey and White Icon for app..... which I do not use nor have it installed on my Stands.  No wonder why I could not change this setting back.   No notes on these changes even here!!

@Candlestore  While I prefer to be up with the times, there is an option in Square for Retail settings to Revert to Old Version.

Due to changes with item variation selection during checkout, we have had to revert back.

Square Champion

@TCSlaguna ;

Reverting to the older Variation changes what the Checkout Experience is like and how Variations are handled.  My issue is not abled to be corrected by reverting to the previous experience.  Its not like it reverts all the way back to version 6.13.1 from 6.22.2 or anything.  JJ_ told me to look in my Settings but no idea which setting enables an Networked Printer Driven Cash Drawer.  It works when I have a Cash sale it opens, when I press Test it Opens, when I try to set my Mornings Starting Drawer theres no way for me to set it.  Yes I have the Default set under settings for Starting Cash Drawer, but sometimes when we think we might be busy we may adjust that opening amount.  I wish Reverting Back reset everything back but seems to just be the way things are displayed at the POS.  I do not understand why SETTINGS are being Changed by an update.  I just ran into another one creating 3 Bundles today, scan an Item and I get error message this item is for another location.  All my items are only for my one location.  I had two locations, the store and wholesale..... I have not put any items in the Wholesale location and actually tried to delete Wholesale Location about a week after creating it because it would not work the way I thought.  Then I found out I can not delete it only disable it which I have done since 2019 or 2020.  Then when I tried to filter my catalog by Location I get either my entire catalog or Nothing.... I am not even given the names of my Locations to choose from to filter.  So I copied and Pasted my Store Names Location to the Filter and it came up Blank.   This problem would have nothing to do with the 6.22.2 update, just more problems and this was me using the Square Dashboard not a POS device.

Settings in an Update should not get deleted or changed or switched off.  I had Sales Taxes Disabled from an Update, This update has gotten it that I can not change the Starting Drawer amount and was told by my wife that the close drawer screens have now changed as of Yesterday.    This is the reason for the Frustration, the Update is throwing SETTINGS off that once set by a business owner should not have to be changed.  JJ_ also said it could be that I am in the Beta Testing and I am not even sure what I am testing right now.... Last thing I think I signed too test was for the Bundles which just got released Monday.  So I am not even sure which Test group I should ask about this.   Thanks for the suggestion of reverting to the previous version, I did not try that till I read your Suggestion or reminder.

So do these bundles not get passed down through a inventory sell through report? Because at least for me it doesn't appear to be yet and that is disappointing as my use for a bundle. As I can sell 300 of an item in a week, but the 10 pack I can sell 100 of these 10 packs a week and all it looks like so far is I'm just seeing sales for the units and not the 10 pack bundle

Square

Got it and thanks for the feedback here. This will really help us as we continue to make future updates and enhancements to this feature.

Are there any plans to include bundle variations? I was so excited about the introduction of bundles, but without variations they are not of much use to us.

I own a yarn store, so my biggest use case for bundles is creating kits that include the required amount of yarn for specific projects. Customers want a choice in what color they use though, so a kit with only one color option simply won't sell.

For example, if we have a kit for a scarf that requires 3 colors, it would be great to have multiple variations for the customer to choose from where each variation is a different color combo. This feature would make bundles very useful to us because they actually would sell very well.

So can confirm that anything sold out of a bundled item does not show up on the inventory sell through report, which is the most important report for me for ordering.

So I'm hoping that at some point that they may fix this issue. Luckily I've only got a few bundles at the moment, but I would like to create alot of them.
