refund on partially paid invoice

Can I refund part of payment on a partially paid invoice. Explanation: The invoice is being paid with 2 different payment methods - credit card and check. The customer made the credit card payment of $400, but now wants to only have $320 paid by card and the rest by check. She wants a refund on her card of $80 - is that possible to do before she sends us a check to pay the rest of the invoice?

When i go to refund the invoice now - it says I must cancel it first??

I know you can choose a $ amount for a Refund and enter it.  

I know this because an employee thought an item was priced at $10,99 but the item was only $7.99.  So I refunded the difference to the customer through Transaction History.  So no receipt and no Invoice in my hand to scan etc.  

When I went to do the refund Square asked If for the full amount (all Items Returned), Some Items, a Dollar amount and maybe somethings else to select.   I selected the Dollar amount and refunded $3.18   The price of the difference of $3 and the tax that would be charged of $.18 cents for me.  The process should be the same for you with an invoice, but I never did a refund on an invoice yet.
