Hi @BlushBrows,

Thanks for getting in touch and sorry to hear about the trouble you've had connecting your reader.

The error you're seeing here about "Developer Options" is actually due to a setting on your mobile device rather than the Square reader itself. Square readers require a secure operating environment in order to process sensitive card data, which means the "Developer Options" on your Android device should be turned off.

You can generally find this setting on your Android Device under "Settings" then "Developer Options" (usually located towards the bottom of your settings) - make sure you flick Developer Options off. Once you've done this, you should be able to pair the reader successfully via the Square POS app.

Please let me know if this helps or if you need any further assistance!

This is a horrible feature.

not having developer options enabled means we cannot debug our devices when they don't work properly.

I have lost countless files and sensitive information on my phone because i cannot connect it to my PC backup program without developer options enabled.

So my website looks corrupt on iphones (your fault, not mine), and now the app can't be used on my Android because I know what I'm doing with it and am capable of using developer options? I'm not changing the daily use of my phone for square, I will find something else. I have had this phone for three years, and have used the app regularly with almost no issue until being forced to update today, and now it can't be opened. I'm at an event right now. This is ridiculous. PLEASE restore function to Android users ASAP.

With the latest Samsung update, a person has to go into settings and enable the USB to connect to a PC.   I download photos often from my phone to the PC and it is a royal pain to go through this every time - so I enabled "Developer options" to allow my PC to download the photos.

But now I have a choice if I want to undo this just to be able to process stinking Square payments.   I think I'll look around and see if I can find another alternative.   Having to go through multiple steps every time I connect to the PC is a real pain without this setting changed!    Why does Square complain about this?

This is the reason I ended up switching away from Square. So many silly restrictions that stop the app from working. My banking apps are completely satisfied with my devices security and settings, but the Square app isnt.. so annoying.

As a payment processor Square's requirements are different from a banking app as you're accepting card payments, rather than doing your personal or business banking, @bayinfo. Turning a mobile phone and reader into a mobile point of sale means we have to do our due diligence to ensure your business details, and customer's card info, is secured. As an app developer myself, I am aware of what level of access some of the 'Developer Options' can grant. But blacklisting the entire 'Developer Options' is just madness. Plenty of people have specific features enabled for perfectly valid reasons. Blocking them all, is just crazy.

If you need to block specific options that may cause a security issue, fine, but don't be lazy and block then entire 'Developer Options' section.

As I said, I have already stopped using my Square reader due to not being able to completely disable 'Developer Options' as I need some of the sub-options enabled for my day to day usage.

I'd be interested in who you switched to.   Square seems to be set in their determination to be difficult to deal with.   This refusale to allow my phone settings to allow me to download my photos when I connect my PC via USB cord to the phone is ridiculous!   So I'm looking for a new credit card processer over this stupid rule!   Any suggestions?

I switched to Zeller. Got an actual EFTPOS terminals, lower fees, and I can even take payments just by tapping cards on the back of my phone.

Also comes with a physical card I can use for making purchases.

Just bought the Square Reader V2 today, rather tacky that Square don't' notify on their ad blurb that you can't have Developer Options turned on.  It also seems that I can't use tap and pay with my phone for the same reasons.

That was a waste of $65    😠

As others have said lazy programming, and 'corporate babble' that no one (available) can actually specifically justify.

Most of these posts are from years ago and Square still has not addressed this.
