disable "add discount" or download old version of POS

How can I disable the "add discount" line on the "review sale" screen?  I want to use POS in a self-serve kiosk and I can't have the customers adding discounts.  If that can't be done, where can I get an old version of POS?  The version that I had on my old iPad (4.7ish) didn't have a "review sale" screen or the ability to "add discount".  It worked great for my kiosk.  I never should have gotten rid of that old iPad.

Have you tried Square Kiosk? It allows you to set up a device to allow customers to self-order/checkout where things like discounts cannot be added.

No, I haven't, but that sounds interesting.  Can credit card numbers be stored in an offline mode?  I have no WiFi at the farm stand where I need it.

You want to set up a self-checkout kiosk using Square, but the official kiosk app requires a constant internet connection and a Square for Restaurants subscription. Here's a workaround to create a self-checkout system that functions similarly to a kiosk, with some limitations:

Setting Up Your Self-Checkout Kiosk

This method uses Square's existing features to create a simplified checkout experience.

1. Prepare Your Dashboard

Before you begin, ensure you have an owner passcode set up for your Square account.

  • On your computer, go to Staff > Permissions > Passcodes > Manage Passcodes.

2. Create a "Self Checkout" Permission Set

This permission set will restrict what actions can be performed on the device.

  1. Go to Staff > Permissions > Create a permission ruleset.
  2. Name it "Self Checkout."
  3. Click Customize Permissions.
  4. Under Rules, turn off everything except for "Checkout."
  5. Under Checkout, select only these options:
    • Take Payments (ensure "Take itemized payments" is checked)
    • To back out of customer facing payment screen (prevents a passcode requirement to cancel a transaction)
    • Add customers (usually checked by default)
    • View all open tickets for individual team member (usually checked by default)
  6. On the next screen, choose where this "team member" can access. Select what's relevant for your setup.

3. Create a "Farm Stand" Team Member

This team member will be assigned the restricted "Self Checkout" permissions.

  1. Go to Staff > Team > Team Members.
  2. Create a new team member.
  3. Name it something like "Farm Stand" or "Self Checkout."
  4. Enter an unused phone number.
  5. Assign a role (e.g., "Self Checkout") and set Pay Type to "None."
  6. Assign the "Self Checkout" permission set you just created.
  7. Set a passcode for this team member (or let Square generate one).
  8. Review and save the settings.

4. Configure Your Device

Now, apply these settings to your Square device.

  1. Open the Square app on your device.
  2. Go to Settings > Security.
  3. Toggle Passcodes on. You'll need to enter your owner passcode.
  4. You'll now see a logout option in the bottom left corner. Tapping this lets you switch between team members.
    • Enter your owner passcode to log in as the owner.
    • Enter the "Farm Stand" team member's passcode to activate the restricted self-checkout mode.

5. Finalize Checkout Experience

Refine the checkout process for your customers.

  1. On the device, go to Settings > Checkout > Payment.
  2. Remove any payment types you don't want customers to use (e.g., house accounts, saved cards).
  3. Avoid variable-priced items where customers can enter their own price, as this may allow a customer to take advantage.

Important Considerations for Offline Mode

If you plan to use offline mode:

  • Connect to the internet BEFORE enabling offline mode on your device.
  • You have a 24-hour window to upload offline payments. Reconnect the device to the internet before this time limit expires to ensure all transactions are processed.
  • Be aware that declined payments in offline mode cannot be recovered. This system works on trust, so monitor it closely.
  • If Wi-Fi isn't available, consider using a hotspot device or an unused phone as a hotspot.

Disclaimer: This is a user-suggested workaround, not an official solution from Square (Block, Inc.). It is not supported and may have limitations.

Hello @VineSmith ! Welcome to the community!

Due to security issues, you're not able to downgrade your versions of the Square POS. However, you can configure the customer verification/cart review screen at More -> Settings -> Checkout. And if the discount option is remaining you can always password protect the usage of it by using permissions. Make one of your permission sets with almost everything turned off. That way your customers can't dig around where they shouldn't be.

That said, running the Point of Sale by itself in a kiosk mode can be quite tricky, and quite frankly the layout isn't really meant for the lay person. I strongly encourage you to look into putting a specific kiosk software on that tablet instead of the point of sale. Square's Kiosk works very well as does KioskBuddy. Both talk to your existing setup and puts an end user friendly face on your system.
