I had the Square app (Square POS) running on a RCA Android Tablet with only 8MB of ram when I started with Square in 2019.
The issue is not if the App will work and connect to it but what other accessories your trying to connect to it. Does the ZTE Avid 589 have a Headphone port? Most newer devices no longer have this for connecting a Mag reader to the device. Is the 589 Bluetooth compatible to connect to a Dip and Chip card reader? 90% of my Square Credit Card sales or more are Tap, Dip, and Chip cards which work with the Bluetooth reader. Since there is no fee to download and sign up for Square you can download the App in the Playstore for free. You only get charge when a Credit Card is used to take a payment for you.
As you can see in the attached link it is compatable with the Software and is only compatible with the Headphone Mag Reader and the Bluetooth Contactless chip reader. You can not do tap to pay to the ZTE 589 without the Bluetooth Contacstless Chip reader. As for Receipt Printers or Cash drawers or Scanners I have no idea.
