Why is Mastercard declined on my Square handheld?

I spent the morning taking offline payments at my local farmer’s market.

I got home to realize that my last two customers used Mastercard to pay, and those payments failed - however, because I was taking offline payments I was not made aware of the declined payment until I got home and connected to WiFi.

1. Why is Mastercard declined? Is there a way to accept Mastercard or is it the Square default to reject it?

2. Is there ANY way to recover these losses?

Thank you for any and all help.

Hi there @SanaAnima.. The fact that both declined cards were Mastercards is purely coincidental.  The reason that both cards were declined is because once you connected to WiFi and the offline transactions were processed, the customers' banks declined them, probably because they didn't have enough credit to cover the transaction.  Square accepts Mastercards all the time, and you were just making a very wrong assumption.

Now, regarding offline transactions.  When you turn it on, Square warns you that you are taking responsibility for the fact that banks might decline transactions.  You are even given the opportunity to limit your exposure here. by setting limits on how much offline transactions can be.  Some sellers get contact information for all offline transactions in case of declinations, especially if they know they are going to have a lot of offline transactions.  Still, the fact remains that this is a risk when accepting offline transactions.  We are given plenty of warnings and are also informed that Square has no responsibility in the event some transactions are declined.  If we choose to take the risk, then we choose to take the whole risk.

Oh, and before you ask, this is how it works with all cards processors that offer offline card processing.  That mode is NOT meant to be used as a primary method of card processing.  It is meant to be used in emergencies and rare situations.
