Redirect Hell

Good morning! I previously had a Wordpress/WooCommerce site that I recently moved to Square. The order I did it in is important, I suspect, because my Weebly/Square site is currently down with a "too many redirects" error.

1. Created Weebly site

2. Went to Dreamhost, where my original site was, and changed the domain to redirect to the weebly site.

3. Yesterday, I went and just paid for the transfer of the registration to Square/Weebly, and transferred the domain.

Now the site is down. I get that this is normal for a domain transfer, but the error (too many redirects) suggests to me that there's an issue because I transferred the domain to the place where I was redirecting it to. In other words, libertyfarmsmontana.com points to libertyfarmsmontana.square.site, which now is supposed to be libertyfarmsmontana.com, which points to the square site...etc.

If I go back to Dreamhost, I see the domain is still there, and yet when I went to delete the redirect, it warned me that I would delete the whole domain, so now I'm really confused because I paid for it to be transferred and followed all the steps.

Am I crazy? Do I need to just wait? I literally just launched a big new product and (I know, my bad) now have no way for people to order it. lol

Thanks in advance for the help with this. 🙂

HI, domains can be a pain.  To understand you need to have the .com at the square.site.  Have you added the .com to the Square Online Dashboard (Online Dashboard, Website, Domains)?  Do you have a paid plan on Square?  A .com on Square requires a paid plan.

Hope This Helps!

Yes, I've upgraded my plan, followed the domain transfer instructions, and done everything else I was supposed to do. Dreamhost support told me that it'll take 7 days to transfer and that it was Square's problem (their support has really gone downhill in the last year lol).

HI, yes, it can take 7 to 14 business days on average.

So going back to the original questions for clarification's sake:

- Should I go to Dreamhost and "stop redirect" even though it says it will "delete the domain"?

- Will the redirect issue fix itself when the transfer completes?

Thanks again for your help! I appreciate it immensely.

Also notable is that I can do anything with the website on the back end, including verification of the domain for third party apps. Which means the domain HAS already transferred from what I can tell.

HI, I am not familiar with Dreamhost dashboard.  What process did you do?  Point-To?  Forwarding?  Redirect?  which all really are the same outcome.  Have you reviewed the Dreamhost support page for the redirect error you are receiving?

Hope This Helps!

I initially did a standard redirect of the URL, which redirected the libertyfarmsmontana.com domain over to the square site and away from the wordpress site I had hosted at Dreamhost.

The domain, while still in transfer (I just checked the status at square), also still shows as a redirect on Dreamhost's end, to the square site. I have the option to stop the redirect, but I get a message that "If you do this, you will delete the domain."

I'm starting to think there's really nothing I can do until the transfer does show as completed and see how it all shakes out then. 😕

Hi @libertyfarm Welcome to the Community 👋

The domain name appears to be loading a Square Online site. Were you able to get this resolved, or do you still need help from your end?

HI there! It's now loading for me, with the SSL and all, but many of my customers say it's still coming up site not found. I've been telling them to clear cookies and cache but that doesn't seem to be working. I am guessing it still hasn't finished propagating...?

Ask customers to use 'CTRL + F5' this will clear the cookies and caches for the site and it should show up fine, alternatively they can clear their caches in their browser!
