We run a fast-casual bakery with two locations. Like many of you, we take special orders for future pickup, and we use Square Orders for the visibility and scheduling features.
The problem? Thereโs no way to place an unpaid Order without marking it as โPaid.โ That means:
If we use Tickets for unpaid orders, they donโt appear in the Orders tab โ breaking production visibility, pickup scheduling, and cross-location coordination.
If we use the โOtherโ payment type to enter an unpaid order into the Orders system, Square still treats it as paid, which inflates revenue and creates confusion at pickup.
What we need is simple: A built-in โPay on Pickupโ option in the Orders workflow โ just like Pickup, Delivery, or Curbside, but flagged as UNPAID.
It would allow us to:
Schedule and track production for unpaid orders
Ensure visibility for the kitchen and FOH teams
Collect payment at the time of pickup without corrupting our revenue reports
Bonus frustration: Square Invoices donโt interface with Orders either โ so we canโt use that workflow to bridge the gap.
Anyone else dealing with this? Letโs push for a proper solution โ itโs a small feature that would fix a massive operational gap for bakeries, cafes, and anyone managing scheduled, prep-based orders.
