Patments by physical card are easy, by hoding the card to the back of the phone.

If someone wants to pay using a digitally stored card (Apple Pay, card stored in Wallet on their phone) do they hold it to the back of the phone or to the card reader?

If it's to the back of the phone, will it read through the phone case?

Welcome to the Square Community.  Yes tap to pay with digitally stored cards would work the same, with the buyer holding their phone to the back of yours.  It should work with the case on , ,but that is depending on the case I suppose.
