How to Set Up Recurring Payments on Specific Items?

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "How to Set Up Recurring Payments on Square for Health Products?"

I'm using Square for my e-commerce store that sells products like Anthisan for insect bite relief. I’m interested in adding subscription or recurring payment options for customers who frequently purchase health and skincare products.

Has anyone here set up recurring payments using Square? What are the best practices for managing subscriptions and ensuring a smooth customer experience?

Hello @lily6 !

Square does offer the option of subscription plans for items, but I caution you that it is pretty basic. The biggest missing component is the option to have local delivery or in store pickup. Currently subscriptions are limited to shipping. It's something quite a few of us have been asking for recently, so hopefully this restriction will be fixed soon.

Here is the help file for setting up subscription items on your dashboard. You can then make these available on your online store either by creating a new page specific to subscription items or having the items in their own category.

Best practices are pretty similar to what you'd do for regular sales: have the item available at time of order, fulfill the order quickly, and set expectations as to how it'll work when someone signs up for the sub. After that, you will need to manage everything for the customer, there currently isn't a customer portal for managing parts of their subscription order.

If you feel Square's built in subscription program is too limited in what you need, I recommend checking out the App Marketplace section of your dashboard. There are a few options for third party subscription addons that link with your Square account.

Hope this helps!
