I’m new here , just a tiny market girl ,(tallow business) but the fees are killing me 😥….. do I just suck it up ??

Hi there @Tallowgirl.. Maybe it would help to reframe your question and to ask a few other questions.  For example, is rent killing you?  What about license fees, utilities and other expenses?  In reality, card processing fees are absolutely no different than any other expense you incur in your business.  So, how do you make money no matter whether you are a "tiny market girl" or an established business like mine that is going into its 13th year and making a solid profit?  The answer is that you set your prices for your products and services so that you CAN make a profit, eventually.  Card processing fees are just another expense.  Here's how I made those fees a non-issue.

 

Thirteen years ago when I was starting my ice cream shop, I knew one thing -- customers definitely do not care about the expenses that we have.  Customer don't want to hear about our perceived problems.  If they want to buy our product/service they will do so.  But they definitely do not want to be made to feel guilty for paying with a card, and they also don't want to be treated differently because they pay with a card.  So, I decided to build the card processing fees into my prices.  

 

I started out adding 3% to my cost-basis and pricing based on that.  Now that number is around 4%.  Everyone pays it when they buy something from me -- just like everyone pays towards my rent, utilities, labor costs and all other expenses that I have.  My products are priced to make a profit every time.  Since cash-paying customers also pay a little more, I'm actually making money on those fees because cash-paying customers don't incur processing fees for my business.  So, it's a win-win.  

 

In thirteen years, no one has ever asked me for a "discount" for paying with cash.  If they did, I wouldn't give them one and wouldn't mind losing that customer because requests like that are entitled and impertinent.  I also learned many years ago that by doing what I do, my business has gained a reputation of being honest and upfront.  When customers as me what payment method I prefer, I get to tell them confidently that "at Piper's we accept all payments gladly.  All we care is that you spend some of your hard-earned money with us, and you'll never hear us complain about how you choose to spend that money."  Believe me when I say that always earns me a lot of respect.

 

Your question can only be answered with "yes, we just have to suck it up," just like we have to suck up all of our expenses. That is the flip side of being in business -- it's hard, it's expensive, it's a challenge every day.  The key to making money is to charge a fair price that covers our expenses and also, eventually, makes us money.  If you do that consistently, you will eventually make money.  Just remember that making a profit doesn't happen immediately.  For every business I've ever started and run, it took a few years to start making a solid, consistent profit.  That's why being a business owner is not for every person.  It takes patience, dedication and the ability to ride it out to start.

 

My experience tells me that you are asking the wrong question.  The fees aren't killing you, any more than your other expenses are killing you.  The real question is "what do I need to charge to make a profit sometime in the future?"  If you start there, and include your fees in your calculations, eventually it will happen.  Fees are just another cost of doing business, period.

@Tallowgirl I'll add something else I should have mentioned in my first reply.  Sometime early next year, Square is planning to rollout automatic card surcharges that fully comply with the card networks' regulations regarding surcharging.  When they do, only CREDIT cards can be surcharged.  Gift cards, debit cards and others will not be allowed to ever be surcharged because the card networks do not allow that.

 

I mention this because even though that will help somewhat, it will not be a complete answer.  In my business, for example, at lest half of my customers use debit cards, so the new automatic surcharging will not recoup those processing fees.  This is another very good reason why I suggest that you build in card processing fees into your product/service prices.  If you do it my way, you actually stand to make a little money in the long run.

10%????  That is not possible.  The highest fees I know are 6% + 30 cents for AfterPay payments.  So, you must be misinterpreting something.  Here's a link to Square's fees for card processing.  Since you said you are new, I can't believe you have a Square Loan you are repaying, yet, so that can't be it.  Do you have a Square Savings account you are automatically putting money into?

 

Otherwise, please post a few screen shots of transactions where you think you are seeing 10% processing fees.  I can help you from there.

I did work it out , it was 28% ! $440 sales ended up with $338 …… you can’t tell me that’s 6% !!!! And when called support ( tech that could HARDLY SPEAK ENGLISH) said oh well that’s what it is ????

im shopping around now !!! So frustrating!!!!!!

I'm right there with @TheRealChipA , if you can post a screenshot hiding any customer or your business info showing the transactions and fees maybe we can help you figure out where this is coming from and or on the rare possibility that something is goofed up on your account.

Thanks for the screen shot @Tallowgirl .  The extra fee from that was the instant transfer you did which was an additional 1.75%.  Regular transfers take 1-2 business days and generally its next business day depending on your bank. 

 

Pretty sure that is where you are seeing a total of almost 6%.

I’ve tried waiting for a few days on the transfer “manual” and it turned out the same total ??? I’m so confused !!!! Is it possible that they are taking USD FUNDS ?????

So you have had the same amount of $440 and did a normal (free) 1-2 business day transfer and it only deposited $338?  Which was the same as a sale of $440 with an instant transfer that netted $338, is that correct?  

 

Just trying to clarify that I am reading your question correct as I jumped in here all willy nilly.

@Tallowgirl Can you PLEASE post a screen shot of the transaction?  Something besides fees is going on here, but we can't possible help you without information.  That being said, if you didn't come here for help and only came here to complain without enough information for us to help you, then yes you should shop around.  We can only help those who help themselves, and you aren't doing that right now.

 

Just giving us those two numbers doesn't help us know where to start.

@Tallowgirl Let's try a couple of things.

 

First, go to your web dashboard > Payments & Invoices > Transactions.  Find the transaction and click on it to open it.  Scroll down to the bottom and take a screenshot of the fees section at the bottom.

 

Next, from your web dashboard, go to Reports > Accounting > Reconciliation.  Select the day of that transaction.  Expand the "Fees & Deductions" line and screen shot that.

 

Post both screen shots here.

@Tallowgirl Ok.  Progress.  Thank you.  So, your problem is definitely NOT with fees, then, as I suspected all along.  There is something else going on.   Maybe an account reserve?

 

From your web dashboard, go to Reports > Accounting > Reconciliation.  Select the day of that transaction.  Expand the "Fees & Deductions" line and screen shot that.  Post it here.

@Tallowgirl That's not a problem at all.  That report can be found and screen shots done from your phone.  There's no limitation at all though it will be formatted differently.

 

Open your web browser and sign into squareup.com.  From there, go to Reports > Accounting > Reconciliation.  Select the day of that transaction.  Expand the "Fees & Deductions" line and screen shot that.  Post those shots here.
