Has anyone been able to implement cash rounding on cash transactions to eliminate the penny?
TIA
Hi @ELees, this functionality is not in Square. It would be a nice feature to implement, especially if it would allow sellers to donate the proceeds to some sort of charity like big box stores do.
Only way around this right now would be to create an item called "Round Up" with a variable price, and put the calculation yourself. if the customer agrees to the round up, just add the item to the cart and do the math. This way they can also see they rounded up.
Thank you, Orlando
Our local bank just informed me that they will not longer handle pennies. As far as I know Square does not offer a, "Cash Rounding" option. This is going to be a big issue moving forward. For now, I will see if I can still get pennies at another bank but eventually, if Square doesn't implement this feature, we will have to stop accepting cash payments. I really don't want to do that. Please let me know if you find a solution. I can't expect my staff to do this manually.
I'd love to see a variable cash rounding feature. I'd love to be able to round *down* to the nearest quarter every time. Then we'd have almost no change to deal with.
With the penny shortage now hitting retailers everywhere, Square needs to implement this ASAP so we can more consistently and professionally handle these transactions.
YES! 100% agree!
Is there any update on this? Especially since the penny is now officially "dead"? I haven't experienced the current shortage yet, but it is coming.
We contacted the emergency number for Square yesterday to ask about a fix for the penny shortage, and the gentleman's response was that he hadn't heard anyone else complain about the penny shortage and that Square currently didn't have a rounding option or "fix" for this issue. Which I know is a lie, because I contacted them a month ago asking about a fix because we knew this was coming.
We are hopeful that Square fixes this issue soon and doesn't leave their customers hanging!
Has Square even acknowledged that they can do this in Canada and are willing to port that functionality? Right now I have enough pennies to cover but within a few shows I won't have any pennies left for cash transactions.
I am definitely concerned about this as well. Seems like it shouldn't be to difficult to add a penny rounding option. I think think there might be some legal implications though.
We were notified by our bank that they will not be giving out pennies for change orders very soon, since there are no more pennies being made.
Our products are all set to the nearest nickel initially, but we offer a lot of percentage discounts *and* do a lot of cash sales.
As of right now, Square doesn't offer a way to round all transactions to the nearest nickel at checkout, so we're trying to figure out what to do about pennies.
I'd love to hear what your thoughts are about how to handle this. In the short term, we will probably have to round up on our own and do a little more math at the end of the day. It's not an ideal solution though.
We need a rounding option in the POS
Agreed. Currently, we have a "round down" discount code added for checkout that will allow us to remove up to 3 cents for some transactions and a "round up" item listing for adding a few cents when that is the correct option. It is going to be a lot of work at the register to remember, and we aren't sure how the change is going to be received, but we have to do something.
How is everyone handling the no penny situation when it comes to your sales? I’ve heard something about rounding, is this something we will have to do at the time of transaction or will Square do it automatically in the US?
Hi there @4dogloves.. I haven't seen any announcements here, yet, about Square's plans. Most likely, this is because they are waiting for government guidance (both federal and state) on what is and is not acceptable. Unfortunately, when the administration announced this, they didn't think about the complications -- it seemed like a good idea and an easy one and no one bothered to think it through. Go figure.
Anyway, in my ice cream shop (only 20% cash tenders these days), we still plan to accept pennies. But if we don't have them for change, we are ALWAYS going to round in favor of the customer. We have decided not to round to the nearest nickel, which would cause some customers to get short-changed. That's just not a good look for any business, really. Besides, since cash is only 20% of our business AND since we made the decision over a decade ago to build the cost of card processing into ALL transactions (cash or card) we can afford to eat a few pennies here or there. Honestly, that decision is a great marketing tool because it reminds our customers that they are more important to us than a few pennies.
That being said, I have no doubt that Square is working on this. They were forced to implement it in Canada a few years ago, so the infrastructure exists. They just have to implement it in the US which, unfortunately, has 50 states that each will no doubt have their own sales tax rules, etc. Ugh.
